July Show: Creature Comforts

New work by Jennifer Cadoff and Alla Podolsky

The animal magnetism is palpable at the Artists' Gallery this July! The walls in the front gallery are lined with creatures great and small - cats, dogs, horses and more - by Philadelphia painter Alla Podolsky and Princeton artist Jennifer Cadoff. The show runs July 6 through August 5, 2007 with an opening reception on Saturday July 14, from 6 to 9:00 pm.

"A God of Frolic"
by Alla Podolsky

The show is called "Creature Comforts" and while the subject matter may be similar, the two artists’ work could hardly be more different. Podolsky's oil paintings have a distinctly urban feel and feature lively brushwork and gorgeous color. Dogs, in all shapes and sizes, play a featured role in the busy buzz of city life that also teems with fruit and vegetable stands, street signs, store-fronts and passers-by. Explains Podolsky, "The work is a look at interactions - between people, people and pets, people and objects, the objects themselves - and at the shared humanity of animals and things."

"Paris Looks Up"
by Jennifer Cadoff

In contrast, Cadoff, in her distinctive pen & ink drawings, zooms in close to horses, dogs and cats, then crops them into quirky eye-catching compositions and flattens the picture plane to emphasize the graphic quality of the animal shapes. The resulting artworks are simultaneously eye-catching and quiet, representational and near abstract. Notes Cadoff, "I like trying to capture those contradictory qualities in each piece."

Alla Podolsky's training as an artist began in her native Kiev when she was a child and culminated in an MFA from the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts.
Jennifer Cadoff's work is often seen in local juried shows, most recently the Ellarslie Open at the Trenton City Museum. She is a Signature Member of the Philadelphia Watercolor Society and the Garden State Watercolor Society.
Gallery hours are Friday, Saturday and Sundays from 11 am to 6 pm, or by appointment.

Photos from Stacy and Taylor's June reception

Here are a few photos from our last opening reception: Taylor Oughton and J. Stacy Rogers' show Natural Expressions - In Landscapes and Portraiture. As always, the opening was a lot of fun, so thanks to everyone who made it there.

This opening was held on the evening of the day that many of our gallery artists were out painting on the Hidden Gardens of Lambertville tour, so a special thanks to them for putting in a long day for the gallery.

At The Hidden Gardens

Saturday was a perfect day for the Hidden Gardens of Lambertville tour, and a perfect day for our gallery artists to be out painting. The tour was very well attended and everyone seemed to enjoy seeing us painting the gardens.

This fall, the Artists' Gallery will have a special exhibit of the paintings we created, and we'll be donating a portion of the sales to the Kalmia Club to support the community work that they do. That will probably take place in September, and we'll announce more details closer to that time.

Here are some photos from Saturday:

June Show: Natural Expressions – In Landscapes and Portraiture

New work by Taylor Oughton and J. Stacy Rogers

Artists' Gallery Opening Reception: June 9th, from 6 to 9:00 pm
Exhibition: June 8 to July 1, 2007

"Half A Winter’s Worth?"
by Taylor Oughton

Taylor Oughton
paints with a gentle respect for nature that comes with decades of observation and experience. You'll see his painting titled "Half A Winter's Worth?". This painting is a classic example of Oughton's natural curiosity and ability to perfectly balance subtle earth tones dotted with ultra-marines and cobalt blues. Oughton's colorful perspectives often intermingle with his artistic convictions. "When painting the natural world, there is an attempt to grasp its fullness. And yet, the opposites we see are actually an awareness of nature’s expression of life and death as always present" says Oughton.

"Jessica"
by J. Stacy Rogers

"I am a portrait artist and people painter" says J. Stacy Rogers "I'll leave the landscapes to Taylor. There is nothing more spectacular then a beautifully painted portrait. But documenting a personality in paint, a child or an adult, has an additional responsibility because it begins the legacy process. So my objective is to create portrait paintings of lasting value and beauty that will be treasured forever and passed down through generations." Human spirit and painting craft are at the heart of Rogers work as well as careful preparation of what he calls 'heirloom paintings'.

Both artists are graduates of the Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts) and winners of numerous prestigious juried show awards. Oughton's work graces the walls of private and corporate collections and numerous museums including the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, PA.

The Artists' Gallery, open Fri., Sat. and Sun., 11am until 6 pm and located at 32 Coryell Street in Lambertville, NJ. For more information: (609) 397-4588 or www.lambertvillearts.com.
