Marking Time – the art of Alan Klawans & Andrew Werth

Marking Time
Alan Klawans and Andrew Werth

September 4 to October 5, 2025
Opening Reception: Saturday, September 6, 4-6 pm

In Marking Time, two Artists’ Gallery members explore memory and the passage of time through very different approaches.

Alan Klawans
"A Green Jungle"

Alan Klawans draws from his archive of travel photographs, transforming the familiar into something new. While his past work has focused on everyday details like manhole covers and street signage, this exhibition highlights evocative photographic “portraits” of flowers —stylized through color and composition— offering a unique reflection on memory and the passage of time.

Andrew Werth
"Then And Once Again"

Andrew Werth marks time through a meditative process, meticulously filling his canvases with thousands of hand-painted curves. His abstract acrylic paintings, often created while focusing on breath or music, achieve remarkable luminosity and depth through subtle color transitions. Drawing on his background as a software developer, Werth's paintings include mathematical elements such as tessellations, tilings, mandalas, and other geometric configurations.

On view all month at Artists’ Gallery. Join us for the opening reception and discover new work from all 16 of our artists.

Chromatic Wanderings - the art of Carol Sanzalone and Andrew Werth

Chromatic Wanderings
Carol Sanzalone and Andrew Werth

Exhibit: November 7 - December 1
Opening Reception: Saturday, November 9, 1-3 pm

This November, Artists’ Gallery invites art enthusiasts to embark on a visual journey through ‘Chromatic Wanderings,’ an exhibition featuring the distinctive works of Carol Sanzalone and Andrew Werth. The show promises a unique exploration of nature’s patterns through two contrasting artistic perspectives. Both draw inspiration from the natural world, yet their approaches couldn’t be more different. Sanzalone's watercolor and acrylic paintings capture the interplay of light and shadow in the Delaware Valley, while Werth's intricate acrylic works delve into the realm of 'organized organic abstraction.'

Carol Sanzalone works in watercolor and acrylic to create paintings inspired by the colors and patterns of light she observes in nature. Graphic shapes from warm sunlight and cool shadows evoke images associated with seasons, times, and places. Her experience in printmaking with both silkscreen and lithography creatively informs and enriches her current work. "This exhibition is a celebration of color and form," says Sanzalone. "I hope visitors will see the familiar landscapes of our region in a new light."

Andrew Werth returns to Artists’ Gallery this year with acrylic paintings comprised of hundreds of hand-painted maze-like marks where subtle color gradations interact to produce a sense of depth and luminosity. A new series of six ‘Mind Wandering’ paintings span the chromatic spectrum and include symmetric forms with a perspectival tilt. This show also includes several new paintings from his ‘Elusive’ series, inspired by concepts from philosophy of mind. "My work invites viewers to both lose themselves in the details and to step back to take in the larger patterns of color," Werth adds.

Please visit the event website for additional information.

And don't forget - along with our featured exhibit, all 16 of our professional artists continuously have their work on exhibit - there is new work here every month. We welcome your visits!

Curves Ahead - The Art of Alan J. Klawans and Andrew Werth

"Curves Ahead"
featuring Alan J. Klawans
and Andrew Werth

May 7 - May 31, 2015
Opening Reception: Saturday, May 9, 4-7pm

Artists' Gallery is pleased to present "Curves Ahead," an exhibition featuring the art of Alan J. Klawans and Andrew Werth.

For years, Alan J. Klawans has been using photographs from his travels around the world as inspiration for his paintings and digital artwork. In "Curves Ahead", he exhibits the photographs themselves, focusing his lens on street graphics, the arrows and lines on the road that help tell us which way to go. "I find it visually exciting to study these markings that, in their unique way, control our everyday behavior," says Klawans. "Sometimes it's their directness, other times it's their state of decay that captures my eye."

Andrew Werth's abstract acrylic paintings are full of tiny curves, individually hand-painted maze-like marks of color that combine optically to form even larger curves and other shapes. For instance, in "Sierpinski Squared", he uses a triangular fractal with symmetric reflections as the framework for one of his paintings. Several of his paintings are structured around Turing patterns, biomorphic shapes that occur in nature and which were first proposed by British mathematician Alan Turing. Werth explains, "When I bring mathematical concepts into my artwork, the painting process is almost like trying to both design and solve a puzzle and I ask myself: How will I be able to lay the paint down to achieve the effect I'm looking for?"

Note that Artists' Gallery will also be open on Memorial Day, 11am-6pm

Visit the event website for more information about this show.

And don't forget - while we feature 2 of our artists each month, all 16 Artists' Gallery artists always have work on display at the gallery.

Ideal Forms: The Art of Alan J. Klawans and Andrew Werth

"Ideal Forms: The Art of Alan J. Klawans and Andrew Werth"

November 6 - November 30, 2014
Opening Reception: Saturday, November 8, 2014, 3-6pm

Artists' Gallery is pleased to present "Ideal Forms," an exhibition featuring the art of Alan J. Klawans and Andrew Werth. The show runs from Thursday, November 6, through Sunday, November 30, 2014. A reception with the artists will be held at the gallery (18 Bridge Street, Lambertville, NJ) from 3 p.m. - 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 8, 2014.

In "Ideal Forms," their fourth exhibition together at Artists' Gallery, Alan J. Klawans and Andrew Werth explore numbers and math through geometric (Klawans) and organic (Werth) abstraction.

Andrew Werth
"The Experiential Now"
30x30 acrylic on panel

Werth's acrylic paintings include "Reality Construction #1 and #2," two paintings composed of "impossible triangles" with regular but subtle progressions of color spanning thousands of hand-painted brushstrokes. For "Balance," Werth wrote a computer program that uses principles of physics to help him design a painting with a balance of squares and circles within the picture plane. He also includes several "Turing Pattern" paintings, based upon the patterns in nature proposed by British mathematician Alan Turing. Werth simulates the underlying physical process on the computer before realizing the designs in paint on aluminum panels.

"I've long been interested in consciousness, perception, and cognitive science," Werth explains. "Most of my paintings in this exhibition are related - abstractly and metaphorically - to the mystery of how we go about making sense of the world," Werth explains.

Alan J. Klawans
"Two"
original digital print

Klawans takes a non-literal approach to numbers in his series, "The Visualization of Numbers One to Ten." Through intuitive rather than typographic means, Klawans constructs geometric abstractions that regard numbers as something more than a counting system. "Since I was a child, I felt that certain numbers had a distinct color appearance," he says. "Each number also has an abstract quality as well as a geometric structure that I try to express in these works."

Klawans received his formal art training in the 1950s and the era still has an influence on him, with hints of jazz album covers and abstract expressionism showing up in his work today. His means of production, however, is thoroughly contemporary: the computer is his primary tool for creating his numerically inspired original digital prints.

Visit the event website for more information about "Ideal Forms"

And don't forget - while we feature 2 artists each month, all of the Artists' Gallery artists will always have work on display.

Concepts & Realizations: Alan J. Klawans and Andrew Werth

"Concepts Realizations"
featuring Alan J. Klawans and Andrew Werth
Sept 5 - Oct 6, 2013
Opening reception: Saturday, September 7, 4-7 pm

Artists' Gallery invites you to join us at the opening reception for our September 2013 exhibition, Concepts + Realizations, featuring the work of Alan J. Klawans and Andrew Werth. The free reception will be on Saturday, September 7, from 4 - 7pm (we're located at 18 Bridge Street, Lambertville, NJ).

Alan J. Klawans
"Normandie"
original digital print

This is the third year in a row that Klawans and Werth have exhibited together. While Alan and Andrew both conceive of their artwork through the lens of abstraction, the two realize their ideas using very different techniques.

Alan begins with photographs and digital scans of objects, textures, and colors from his travels around the world. "I think about some meaningful object or memory and then extrapolate that idea into something visually abstract," Klawans says. "For my print, Normandie, I was thinking about the colors, textures, and shapes of the most luxurious ocean liner of the art deco era." He then combines this imagery digitally with hand-drawn graphics, lines and shapes that provide structure as well as accent. The end result is a series of framed, limited edition digital prints that have both the crispness of digital creation and the visual texture of the real world.

Andrew Werth
"Arising #2"
acrylic on panel, 24 x 24

Andrew's acrylic paintings explore the interaction of color on multiple scales. His software engineering background comes in handy as he designs biomorphic compositions on the computer, often by simulating real-world biological processes and adding some artistic tweaks and twists along the way. After toning the support (this year, he's working on Dibond aluminum panels) and painting the base layers of the design, he proceeds to fill the surface with thousands of hand-painted marks of graduated color. If you've visited the gallery and wondered about Andrew's process, he recently put together a video on YouTube demonstrating the entire process from start to finish.

This show runs from September 5 through October 6, and the gallery now has extended operating hours (Thursday through Sunday from 11am - 6pm). We hope to see you there!

"Patterns & Meaning" - Alan J. Klawans and Andrew Werth

Please join us for Artists' Gallery's next show:

"Patterns & Meaning"
featuring Alan J. Klawans
and Andrew Werth

November 9 - December 2, 2012
Opening reception: Saturday, Nov 10, 3 to 6 pm

Artists' Gallery is pleased to present "Patterns & Meaning", an exhibition featuring the art of Alan J. Klawans and Andrew Werth. Using the formal terms of abstraction such as color, contrast, composition, and repetition, Klawans and Werth encourage viewers to explore the relationship between the visual image and meaning.

Andrew Werth
"Creation"
30x40, acrylic on panel

Andrew Werth, a former computer engineer turned artist, celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of mathematician Alan Turing by presenting paintings that use "Turing Patterns" for their underlying structure. Turing, in addition to being famous for his work on computer science, artificial intelligence, and cryptography, also wrote an influential paper describing how certain processes in nature could produce forms like the patterns on zebras and leopards.

Werth simulates these processes on the computer and embeds meaning in his images by twisting, tweaking, and otherwise transforming the patterns before turning them into paintings. He carefully designs the color transitions and then hand-paints thousands of individual marks of color so that the images have an optical depth that belies their flat surface.

Alan Klawans
"Rotunda"
30x20, original digital print

Alan J. Klawans also uses the computer as a tool in the production of his artwork. He begins each piece with a single word and uses that as a starting point for an abstract design that reflects upon the word's meaning. The words he starts with are taken from contemporary media sources and cover a variety of subjects including architecture, games, climate change, economics, politics, and war. Klawans interprets his linguistic subjects into graphic arrangements of colors and shapes, using lines both for structure and for visual accents in his compositions. The result is a series of original, limited edition digital prints.

Note:  We are all struggling through Hurricane Sandy and many of us went without electricity for far too long. But rest assured, power is back at Artists' Gallery and we will be open our normal hours. We hope you can join us at the November 10th Opening Reception and celebrate life returning to normal.

Curves and Colors - Alan J Klawans and Andrew Werth

 "Curves and Colors"
Alan J Klawans and Andrew Werth

April 8 - May 1, 2011
Opening reception: Saturday, April 9, 2011, 2:00-6:00 pm

Abstraction takes a turn this month at Artists' Gallery in a show featuring the work of Alan J. Klawans and Andrew Werth from Friday, April 8, through Sunday, May 1, 2011.

Andrew Werth's paintings in this show comprise a body of work he calls "Centers of Narrative Gravity" where swirls of color interact with thousands of individually hand-painted marks to create interactive paintings whose appearance changes depending upon where you stand.

"I'm using a combination of color theory and metallic and reflective acrylic paints so that you'll see something different up close than you will from far away or from an angle. The paintings read differently even as the light changes over the course of a day," Werth says. He explains the show's title, "Just like in physics, where a center of gravity is a useful abstraction even though it doesn't exist in reality, the Center of Narrative Gravity is a useful metaphor for The Self - we are the centers of the stories we tell about ourselves."

Alan J. Klawans' work is the result of his observations on contemporary life. Decorative elements of buildings, ships, commuter trains and construction sites, as well as imagery from science and current events, make up the visual toolbox from which he draws. "The visual aspects of my environment, especially in an urban area, are constant sources of inspiration for me," says Klawans. "The use of wood, metal salvage, and waste paper - in the form of digital shapes and textures - are my alternatives to the traditional artist's materials of paint and canvas."

Please join us for a reception with the artists on Saturday, April 9 from 2 to 6 pm.

Ellarslie Open XXVIII and The Salon at Artworks

"Train Approaching #1"
by John Treichler

The annual Ellarslie Open at the Trenton City Museum and Artworks in Trenton . As usual, the Artists' Gallery is pretty well represented. Accepted into Ellarslie Open XXVIII were works by Jennifer Cadoff, Jo-Ann Osnoe and Andrew Werth, as well as two pieces by John Treichler. Accepted into the Salon Show were additional works by Jennifer Cadoff and John Treichler.

Juror Michael Cagno chose to include original artwork selected from 576 submissions. Trenton City Museum Director Brian Hill declares that this years' Ellarslie Open at Ellarslie and at Artworks will be like no other. For the first time, the juror selected works for both exhibits. The edgier work selected for Artworks in tandem with the more classical disciplines at Ellarslie has created two individual exhibitions worthy of either venue.

The exhibit at Artworks runs April 23 - June 1, with an Opening reception Friday, April 23 from 6:00 to 9:00pm. The exhibit at Ellarslie Mansion opens April 24 - June 20, with an Opening reception Saturday, May 1, 6:00 to 9:00 pm

Visit the Ellarslie and Artworks websites for directions, and more information.
