Time of Day(s) - the art of Alla Podolksy and Laura Rutherford Renner

Time of Day(s)
Alla Podolsky and Laura Rutherford Renner

August 7 to August 31, 2025
Opening Reception: Saturday, August 9, 3-6 pm

Laura Rutherford Renner and Alla Podolsky explore the subtleties of narrative, memory, and color in two distinct yet complementary voices.

Renner traces narrative through shadow, shape, and bold color. Her work has been described as "bold, brave, and a true voice." She writes: "Capturing contemporary life snapshots in two dimensions is an exercise in problem solving and creativity… The quiet engagement of brush to palette and brush to board provides daily calm and purpose."

"End of the Line"

Podolsky views painting as a way to preserve time - not linearly, but as vivid, emotional moments. A native of Kyiv, Ukraine, she draws on its rich narrative and iconographic traditions. "Colors, light, and compositions unique to those moments make their way into my paintings. They help me tell a story and keep time."

Not to Be Forgotten - the art of Alla Podolsky and Laura Rutherford Renner

Not to Be Forgotten
Alla Podolsky and Laura Rutherford Renner

Exhibit: October 10 - November 3
Opening Reception: Sunday, October 13, 2-4 pm

Announcing "Not to Be Forgotten," a new exhibit of paintings by Laura Rutherford Renner and Alla Podolsky.

Laura Rutherford Renner, from Collingswood, NJ, enjoys painting figures engaged in the experience of their environments. Her work has been recently described as "Bold, brave, and a true voice." Renner states: "Capturing contemporary life snapshots in two dimensions is an exercise in problem solving and creativity. I enjoy mixing pure colors, keeping my palette simple to create authentic observation. The quiet engagement of brush to palette and brush to board provides daily calm and purpose". Laura, an occupational therapist for the past 27 years, has recently retired from this important work. She lives with her husband, their child, and their snarky, beloved cat, Lulu.

"As a figurative painter, I am, essentially, a memory keeper" says Philadelphia artist Alla Podolsky. "I paint people, places, and events that are ‘etched in ember’ of my perception. People I loved and lost, experiences that stayed with me, moments that I want to revisit again and again—my work is a way of keeping them all. Color, light, composition are my means of staying connected. It’s both intensely personal to me and largely universal." A native of Kiyv, Ukraine, Alla Podolsky traces her love of psychological painting to that ancient city’s iconography and rich narrative traditions. Her work is a combination of her European sensibilities and her American experiences.

Please visit the event website for additional information.

And don't forget - along with our featured exhibit, all 16 of our professional artists continuously have their work on exhibit - there is new work here every month. We welcome your visits!

Origin of Wonder - the art of Bill Jersey and Laura Rutherford Renner

"Origin of Wonder"

Featuring
Bill Jersey
and
Laura Rutherford Renner

 May 6 - June 6, 2021

Artists Bill Jersey and Laura Rutherford Renner are pleased to announce the opening of their joint show, "Origin of Wonder", on Thursday, May 6th. The exhibit, which runs through June 6th, features oil paintings by the two artists. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will be no Opening Reception for this exhibition.

"Origin of Wonder" invites you to pause, to see, to remember the wonder of the world that we share with you.

Residing in beautiful Hunterdon County, NJ, Bill Jersey states "I am surrounded by creeks, forests, fields and hills-an abundance of scenes I want to capture or interpret on canvas. Over time, my paintings evolved from more realistic scenes of the natural world to more interpreted representations, using dramatic colors to evoke fresh perspectives. As a documentary filmmaker of many years, I learned to catch a moment in time and use it to tell a larger story. That is what I seek to capture in my paintings."

Laura Rutherford Renner, from Collingswood, NJ, enjoys painting figures engaged in the experience of their environments. "Capturing these interactions in two dimensions is an exercise and a source of calm. I relish mixing pure colors, keeping my palette simple to create authentic observation. The quiet engagement of brush to palette and brush to board provides meaning for me everyday". Laura, an occupational therapist for the past 27 years, is currently working with young students in public school, aged 3-13 years old, on life skills and academic tasks.

Moments in Life - the art of Carol Sanzalone and Laura Rutherford Renner

Artist's Gallery is open with our regular hours, and we've resumed our schedule of shows featuring 2 artists each month.  Please join us this month for "Moments in Life", featuring the art of Carol Sanzalone and Laura Rutherford Renner:

Special people and places that inspire the paintings of Laura Rutherford Renner and Carol McClure Sanzalone, will be showcased as the featured artists at Artists' Gallery for the month of July. For the reopening celebration this month, we encourage you to join us, wearing masks and exercising social distancing, as you enjoy the glorious paintings of our sixteen gallery artists.

Laura Rutherford Renner is an artist whose paintings on wood depict contemporary life in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. "Capturing a snapshot of living forms in two dimensions on a slab of smoothly prepared wood is a contemplative exercise and a source of calm", says Renner. "I enjoy mixing pure colors, keeping my palette simple to create authenticity of what is observed, not assumed."

Carol McClure Sanzalone is fascinated by the graphic qualities of shadow and light. "Working in watercolor and acrylic, I am able to creatively express, with transparent washes of color, the images that inspire my work - as uniquely wonderful as a pile of leaves in the morning light, or the shapes and textures that enliven the countryside."

Please note that there is no opening reception for this exhibit, due to social distancing recommendations. The gallery will be open our regular hours and we hope that you can visit us!

Momentum at Rest - the art of Richard Harrington Laura Rutherford Renner

"Momentum at Rest"

new works by
Richard Harrington
and
Laura Rutherford Renner

October 5 - November 5, 2017
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 7, 4-8 pm

Artists Laura Rutherford Renner and Richard Harrington are pleased to announce the opening of their joint show, "Momentum at Rest" on Thursday, October 5th, at Artists' Gallery, 18 Bridge Street, Lambertville, NJ. The exhibit, which runs through Sunday, November 5th, features watercolor, gouache, acrylic, and oil paintings by the two artists. An Opening Reception with the artists will be held on Saturday, October 7th, from 4 to 8 pm.

Laura Rutherford Renner, who maintains her studio in Collingswood, NJ, often uses the sights from her hometown and Southern New Jersey as the starting point for her work.

Rutherford Renner finds that the light at different times of the year can make something that may appear as mundane an interesting subject for a painting.

The title of the exhibition, "Momentum at Rest", was initially proposed by Rutherford Renner after sketching her cat, Lulu, dozing in the sun in her studio. "Momentum at Rest is a celebration of reflective light on objects and figures in a defining moment. My inspiration for these painting is light on forms, especially reflected light within shadows. That is something that attracts me to paint a certain scene or subject" says Rutherford Renner." I also find the reflections of light on water to be especially intriguing, and I enjoy the challenge capturing that effect in my work. I always have a camera and a sketchbook with me, so I can do a sketch and take a photo whenever I'm inspired."

Richard Harrington, of Newtown, PA, finds his inspiration for Momentum at Rest in the mid-20th century chromed and finned marvels produced by Detriot automakers. "When Laura approached me with this title, I immediately thought of vehicles that were designed to look fast or powerful even while standing still" says Harrington." Some of the works in this exhibition of vehicles left sitting in fields I painted plein air, while others of lovingly preserved or restored vehicles were painted from photographs. I enjoy the beauty in their designs and character whether they are rusting and dented, or look as if they had just been sold off the showroom floor."

Memories of Change - the art of Alla Podolsky and Laura Rutherford Renner

"Memories of Change"
Alla Podolsky
and
Laura Rutherford Renner

Oct 6 - Nov 6, 2016

Opening Reception: Saturday Oct 8, 4-7 pm
Closing Reception: Sunday Nov 6, 3-6 pm

The spaces and people that enable us to grow and thrive, the settings that are beset by transformation or neglect, are the focus of the work by Alla Podolsky and Laura Rutherford Renner at Artists Gallery in Lambertville, NJ, from October 6th to November 6th, 2016, with an opening reception on Saturday, October 8, from 4 to 7pm, and the closing on Sunday November 6th from 3 to 6pm.

Alla Podolsky's work is all about the memories. "I paint memories of places, events, faces, emotions. Fleeting things. Things that change constantly, even in the ways we remember them. It's a rush to preserve them, to keep them as experienced. Which is as nearly impossible as it is tempting. Memories tend to change on us, the further we get removed from them, so my paintings are imprecise. They are all about that change, and a way of holding on."

Born and raised in Kiev, Ukraine, Alla Podolsky traces her love of psychological painting to the Byzantine-style iconography of that city. After immigrating to the United States in 1990, she continued her art education at Moore College of Art and Design (1995), and later received Master's Degree in painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1999). She continues to paint and develop her voice as an artist.

Laura Rutherford Renner is an artist whose paintings on wood depict contemporary life in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Her work has been included in various juried exhibitions and shows, recently as a juried member of Artists Gallery in Lambertville, NJ, and at the iconic Philadelphia Sketch Club. In addition to her painting career, Laura is a practicing Occupational Therapist and the published author of several OT biographical articles. She lives in Collingswood, NJ. Laura has previously exhibited in Artists House Gallery in Philadelphia for nearly 10 years.

While Podolsky is a long time member of the Artists' Gallery in Lambertville, Renner is in her first year of this partnership, and this is an exciting opportunity for both artists to have their works exhibited side-by-side. They share aesthetic sensibilities and the love of the genre painting. Even though their approaches differ, there are connections and parallels that make for the dynamic and interesting visual dialog.

Together, they have attracted art collectors from the region who value their depiction of feeling for place and the inherent interactions that happen there. This intriguing and powerful exhibit will please art lovers throughout the region.
