OUTSIDE - INSIDE - the art of Heather Barros and Larry Mitnick

OUTSIDE - INSIDE
Heather Barros and Larry Mitnick

Exhibit: - April 6 to April 30
Opening Reception: Saturday, April 15, 1-4 pm

Painters Larry Mitnick and Heather Barros each approach the notion of "Outside-Inside" from their particular vantage, yet one finds common ground in their show. Mitnick's work is clearly more formal and abstract, while Barros' work bends to the figurative.

These artworks present the viewer with shape and color. Mitnick's paintings are exclusively geometric. He invents shapes and forms to create his own landscapes. Barros' oils and pastels allude to corresponding shapes and colors in the landscape. Within her urban scenes, we find squares and triangles ready to be abstracted - if we choose to see them that way. While viewers may never divine Mitnick's specific inspiration, there is a structure in each of his compositions. Fragments of his thinking become visible once our eyes discover the link between any two elements.

Other of Barros' landscapes are more organic. A sandy country road leads to a stand of trees. Light leads to darkness. Color delineates form and space. And here, despite his straight-edge precision, Mitnick echoes Barros. His trapezoidal shapes also suggest light leading to dark, but in a layered way. One senses depth in the separation of Mitnick's layers, as one senses depth in Barros' receding country road. But in Mitnick's work, the ordering of layers, our perception of which are near and which are far, can have multiple interpretations.

Heather Barros ventures into the outside world, while Larry Mitnick ventures within. Art is a portal that connects the two worlds. There is beauty to be found, whether one is inside looking out or outside looking in.

Moorings - the art of Heather Barros and Larry Mitnick

Moorings
Heather Barros and Larry Mitnick

Exhibit: May 5 - June 5

Opening Reception with Larry Mitnick: Saturday, May 7, 1-4 pm
Closing Reception with Heather Barros: Saturday, June 4, 1-4 pm

The exhibition "Moorings," featuring recent paintings by Heather Barros and Larry Mitnick, addresses connectedness on several levels. Both artists use lines to visually tie a set of abstract shapes to something else. These imagined shapes are buoyant; fast lines secure them. Barros' elements may be anchored to an unseen ground, while Mitnick's shapes are often bound to companion travelers. Movement is implied even if the motion is constrained, so the paintings suggest a tethered kinesis.

Imagining Space - the art of Heather Barros and Larry Mitnick

"Imagining Space"

Featuring
Heather Barros
and
Larry Mitnick

April 8 - May 2, 2021

Imagining space is different from imagining spaces. Heather Barros and Larry Mitnick understand that "spaces" are constrained by boundaries. A meadow may be circumscribed by a row of trees, and a room by its walls. In imagining "space" these two artists seek to invert the perspective. Both ponder space independent of the space’s periphery. They use forms we understand to prescribe a space we may not. That space can be vast. That space can be twisted; it can be atmospheric. So, for these artists and in very different ways, the path through space leads to abstraction.

Heather Barros
oil on canvas

Heather Barros imagines space in paintings of interiors and landscapes. She understands that spatial orientation requires an anchor point. She seemingly provides these for us, but upon close inspection her anchors are often unmoored. She may offer a window through which we can see, but the view is empty. If not bare canvas, the paint has been wiped to near-translucency. Detail is sacrificed, information is lost, but volume survives. Other times it is unclear if we are looking at or through water, through fog, or at sheer emptiness. "Viewers don’t quite know where they stand," she says of this work. "But like moths attracted to light, I hope to lure their gaze to a certain distance. They may be looking at paint, but I want them to see and imagine space."

Larry Mitnick
"Side Order"
acrylic on canvas

Larry Mitnick’s paintings are more overtly abstract. He overlays shapes and colors upon one another to create textured compositions with little correlation to the world we normally perceive. We project upon these works our own imagined sense of space. We see layered elements. Color, value, and varying degrees of transparency are employed to suggest depth. Acknowledgment of depth is this artist’s lure. His hook, what captivates the viewer, is an enigma in its distillation. Exactly which shape is in front of what? How can a color be in front of one element and not behind another? These paintings pose uneasy questions. Their beauty is that they assert their own sense of balance and order.

Landscapes We See - the art of Heather Barros and Bill Jersey

"Landscapes We See"
featuring
Heather Barros
and
Bill Jersey

August 6 - September 6, 2020

Heather Barros and Bill Jersey train their eye upon an inhabited landscape, albeit a landscape momentarily void of inhabitants. We understand that this is a populated environment because we see traces of human endeavor - paths, bridges, buildings, and the like. Neither artist obligates her or himself to a literal representation, and both are willing to edit an element whenever it benefits her or his composition. Thus both paint expressively. Yet each sees in a very different way. This allows us, as viewers, to better appreciate how perception is diffracted through the lens of creativity.

Bill Jersey
"New Blossoms Old Limbs"
oil on canvas

Bill Jersey paints more boldly, generally on larger canvases and with a surreal palette. His color choices may be grounded in reality, but what we see is the product of an inspired imagination.

Heather Barros
"Sourlands Uphill"
oil on canvas

Heather Barros paints on a more intimate, human scale. While her canvases vary in size, with several comparable to those of Bill Jersey's, their feeling is entirely different. For her, landscape is a metaphor for her surroundings as much as it is a state of mind.
