Observations - the art of Joseph DeFay and Alan J. Klawans

"Observations"

Featuring
Joseph DeFay
and
Alan J. Klawans

December 10, 2020 - January 3, 2021

Joseph DeFay's photographs pull out the simpler aspects of everyday life so they can be seen with a renewed beauty and an exciting new perspective. Shooting subjects up close gives the opportunity to see detail that one would not ordinarily notice. Joe's larger than life images compel the viewer to linger, and to share the same vision that he has from behind the lens.

Many years ago, an art teacher told Alan Klawans to always look up, beyond the second story of buildings, because that's where all the interesting architectural detail was. Alan has always followed that advice, but in recent years he's become very interested in the surfaces and symbols of the street itself. The traffic control lines, directional arrows, crosswalk patterns, utility covers, and the material that the street is made of has become a source of inspiration for his artwork. Alan uses his camera and computer to interpret these surfaces and symbols, and present the viewer with interesting, contemporary images to contemplate.

Reflection - the art of Jane Adriance and Debbie Pisacreta

 "Reflection"
Featuring
Jane Adriance
and
Debbie Pisacreta

November 5 - December 6, 2020

The Pandemic, and the resulting quarantine, forced each of us to be isolated more. For Jane Adriance and Debbie Pisacreta, this was a time of quiet reflection which affected the kind of paintings they produced, and the emotions they felt when painting.

"The title of this exhibit seems very fitting for me," said Jane. "Since last March with the pandemic 'shut down' and my isolation I needed to stop and reflect about the life I had taken for granted. While life seemed so sad and frightening to so many others as well as myself ... I discovered a silver lining. In my appreciation for being alive, I followed a dream (with no excuses now) to return to the sensual use of painting with oils. I had been painting with watercolors for many decades. I was ready for this challenge and new perspective.

I am hoping you will enjoy my first exhibit of these oil paintings as much as I am grateful to have opened this door for me again."

Debbie has always found her inspiration and joy from plein air painting, but that joy was heightened during this last six months. "I was fortunate that I could continue to paint Plein air while still maintaining social distancing. Painting was a respite from all of the sadness and anxiety surrounding the Pandemic and its effects. It gave me a chance to feel peace and to be grateful for the beauty of my surroundings.

I am hopeful that that feeling of serenity is translated to the viewer."

October 8, - November 1 2020

Acclaimed artists Beatrice Bork and Joe Kazimierczyk will exhibit their nature-inspired paintings in an art exhibition entitled "In Our Nature", running October 8 through November 1.

Joe and Beatrice both draw their inspiration from their outdoor experiences and it's simply in their nature to paint what they love. Joe, an oil painter expresses the beauty of the region's landscapes, forests and rivers. Beatrice’s watercolor paintings display a sensitivity to detail and composition, elevated through direct observation and love of her animal subjects.

Environments - the art of Michael Schweigart and Maxine Shore

 "Environments"
Featuring
Michael Schweigart
and
Maxine Shore

September 10 - October 4, 2020

Michael Schweigart and Maxine Shore could not be more different in their approach to painting the landscape, but their impact together is dynamic. Maxine's bold color harmonies excite the senses and her geometric shapes and light patterns create complex compositions. Michael's palette is subtle with natural muted tones of light and shadow and a sharp focus on detail.

"Environments" brings together the best of both styles and you know what they say, "opposites attract".

Landscapes We See - the art of Heather Barros and Bill Jersey

"Landscapes We See"
featuring
Heather Barros
and
Bill Jersey

August 6 - September 6, 2020

Heather Barros and Bill Jersey train their eye upon an inhabited landscape, albeit a landscape momentarily void of inhabitants. We understand that this is a populated environment because we see traces of human endeavor - paths, bridges, buildings, and the like. Neither artist obligates her or himself to a literal representation, and both are willing to edit an element whenever it benefits her or his composition. Thus both paint expressively. Yet each sees in a very different way. This allows us, as viewers, to better appreciate how perception is diffracted through the lens of creativity.

Bill Jersey
"New Blossoms Old Limbs"
oil on canvas

Bill Jersey paints more boldly, generally on larger canvases and with a surreal palette. His color choices may be grounded in reality, but what we see is the product of an inspired imagination.

Heather Barros
"Sourlands Uphill"
oil on canvas

Heather Barros paints on a more intimate, human scale. While her canvases vary in size, with several comparable to those of Bill Jersey's, their feeling is entirely different. For her, landscape is a metaphor for her surroundings as much as it is a state of mind.

Moments in Life - the art of Carol Sanzalone and Laura Rutherford Renner

Artist's Gallery is open with our regular hours, and we've resumed our schedule of shows featuring 2 artists each month.  Please join us this month for "Moments in Life", featuring the art of Carol Sanzalone and Laura Rutherford Renner:

Special people and places that inspire the paintings of Laura Rutherford Renner and Carol McClure Sanzalone, will be showcased as the featured artists at Artists' Gallery for the month of July. For the reopening celebration this month, we encourage you to join us, wearing masks and exercising social distancing, as you enjoy the glorious paintings of our sixteen gallery artists.

Laura Rutherford Renner is an artist whose paintings on wood depict contemporary life in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. "Capturing a snapshot of living forms in two dimensions on a slab of smoothly prepared wood is a contemplative exercise and a source of calm", says Renner. "I enjoy mixing pure colors, keeping my palette simple to create authenticity of what is observed, not assumed."

Carol McClure Sanzalone is fascinated by the graphic qualities of shadow and light. "Working in watercolor and acrylic, I am able to creatively express, with transparent washes of color, the images that inspire my work - as uniquely wonderful as a pile of leaves in the morning light, or the shapes and textures that enliven the countryside."

Please note that there is no opening reception for this exhibit, due to social distancing recommendations. The gallery will be open our regular hours and we hope that you can visit us!
