Photographing subjects up close, Joseph DeFay provides the ability to see details that would not ordinarily be noticed. His intention is to compel each viewer to linger with the same vision that he enjoys behind the lens: the interplay between vibrant colors and that special quality of light. DeFay spends a great deal of time with composition, searching for the precise arrangement of the subject. The work allows him to preserve these moments and share these valuable experiences with others.

As a painter, DeFay creates colorful abstract paintings that seek to reconnect with a sense of play and embrace the unexpected. He enjoys working in the abstract expressionist style for its looseness freedom, and the elements of surprise. He is fascinated by the ways abstraction allows for the individual interpretation by each viewer. Seeing that connection happen is one of the highlights of being an abstract artist.

Residing in beautiful Hunterdon County, New Jersey, Bill Jersey is surrounded by creeks, forests, fields and hills—an abundance of scenes he wants to capture or interpret on canvas. Over time his paintings evolved from more realistic scenes of the natural world to more interpreted representations, using dramatic colors to evoke fresh perspectives. As a documentary filmmaker of many years he learned to catch a moment in time and use it to tell a larger story. That is what he seeks to capture in his paintings.

Jersey has produced and directed award-winning documentary films for network television for over 50 years. Eventually his focus shifted to painting landscapes, and when he turned 91, he became a painter full time. He paints every day in his studio in Lambertville, New Jersey.

Photographing subjects up close, DeFay provides the ability to see details that one would not ordinarily notice. It is fascinating to explore and observe how individual elements interact and to present them on a grander scale than the ordinary obvious perspective. His intention is to compel each viewer to linger with the same vision that he enjoys behind the lens. DeFay enjoys the interplay between vibrant colors and that special quality of light, which invariably captures his attention. He spends a great deal of time with composition, searching from behind the lens for the precise arrangement of the subject. This work allows DeFay to preserve these moments, in order to share this valuable experience with others.

Sanzalone, inspired by the interaction of color and forms, creatively captures the graphic impact of natural and reflected light patterns, throughout the day and seasons. With texture, shapes and washes of color, a painting will often develop from an experimental, rather than a realistic approach to a subject - " The painting and I work together, as one thing leads to another! " - says Sanzalone. Artistically, her "Emotional Odyssey" has included work in a variety of media, painting in watercolor, acrylic, oil and printmaking in silkscreen and lithography, as well as professional experience in Graphic Design. When she considers a subject she is always drawing on that creative history.

Joseph DeFay's photographs pull out the simpler aspects of everyday life so they can be seen with a renewed beauty and an exciting new perspective. Shooting subjects up close gives the opportunity to see detail that one would not ordinarily notice. Joe's larger than life images compel the viewer to linger, and to share the same vision that he has from behind the lens. 

Many years ago, an art teacher told Alan Klawans to always look up, beyond the second story of buildings, because that's where all the interesting architectural detail was. Alan has always followed that advice, but in recent years he's become very interested in the surfaces and symbols of the street itself. The traffic control lines, directional arrows, crosswalk patterns, utility covers, and the material that the street is made of has become a source of inspiration for his artwork. Alan uses his camera and computer to interpret these surfaces and symbols, and present the viewer with interesting, contemporary images to contemplate.

"Ghosts", was initially proposed by Rich Harrington after looking at Joseph DeFay's photos of obsolete machinery.

"I was struck by how Joe captures the beauty of something that others look at as scrap metal or junk," Harrington said. "I see the same thing in a car or truck that has been parked behind a building, or left to rust away in a field."

The artists' shared interest in locales and objects that bear evidence of past lives is what led them to plan their joint show.

Artists' Gallery is pleased to present "Surroundings," an exhibition featuring the graphic art of Alan J. Klawans and the photographs of Joseph DeFay.

Contemporary life has always affected Alan's art. "The ideas for my work are from observations I have made of my daily life, my family, people I have known, books I have read, movies that I have seen and television I have watched. The events that I have experienced during my life have been, as with most peoples' lives, both mundane and of great importance. My reflections on these events have provided me with an inexhaustible source of ideas for my work. The materials and technical processes used to create my pictures constantly change in order to express my ideas. My digital printmaking is the result of my background as a graphic designer and a traditional contemporary printmaker".

"During my travels, either local or abroad, I have always experienced a sense of place. Although my art is very abstract, I have tried to express that feeling of the places that I have been".

Joseph's photographs tend to pull out the simpler aspects of everyday life so they can be seen with a renewed beauty, and an exciting new perspective. "A completely open mind, favoring no particular philosophy, allows me to fully accept what each raw opportunity to create provides, and decide if it is to be refined and shared. My goal is to inspire those who see my work to look more carefully at the world around them, to discover beauty in their surroundings. Traditional artistic concerns prove an interesting challenge when capturing people, places, or objects in the moment, but are always held in high regard".

Artists' Gallery is pleased to present "Perceptions," an exhibition featuring the watercolors of Jane Adriance and the photographs of Joseph DeFay. Both artists have unique perceptions of the world they see around them. They reflect a perspective that is not based on what we normally call "reality". This photographer and painter offer images that may be surprising and at the same time compliment each other with a beauty that offers new perspectives in opposing mediums.

Working with watercolors, Jane intends to go beyond what she perceives in her everyday life. A kind of poetic license to reflect a point of view that can be startling and contradictory and yet beautiful. Jane uses color as her primary focus which is embraced by dynamic compositions of light, line textures and space.

Joseph's photographs tend to pull out the simpler aspects of everyday life so they can be seen with a renewed beauty, and an exciting new perspective. "A completely open mind, favoring no particular philosophy, allows me to fully accept what each raw opportunity to create provides, and decide if it is to be refined and shared. Artists' Gallery is pleased to present "Enchantment," an exhibition featuring the oil paintings of Maxine Shore and the photographs of Joseph DeFay.

Inspiration for my paintings often comes from places near and far that spark my imagination. Because I work exclusively in oils, I usually rely on watercolor or pencil sketches as well as my camera to record images that I work on in my studio. Such was the case with the painting, Cinque Terre, which depicted a town in Italy my husband and I visited last year. A photograph of the painting was featured in the New York Times this past February.

I'm a painter who loves color. Seeing and interpreting the various colors I find in landscapes is what interests and inspires me. Every time I begin a new painting, I challenge myself to see and interpret my subject with a fresh approach. Looking for unexpected colors and movement in a scene is what I strive to capture in my work.

Joseph is a member of the Photographic Society of Philadelphia and the Plastic Club. His work has been exhibited at Penn Medicine Rittenhouse, the Plastic Club, the Art Alliance, Perkins Center for the Arts, Bucks County Audubon Society, and the Hamilton Township Public Library.

My photographs attempt to document a view of the various ways individuals explore their existence through philosophy, religion, or tradition. My current exhibit - New Vrindaban (The Land of Krishna) - includes photos taken in the mid-seventies during a four-day stay at a Hare Krishna farm community in West Virginia. They are being seen together for the first time.

Krishna (meaning Dark or Dark Blue) also known as Govinda (Cow Protector), is one of the most beloved and widely worshipped of all the Hindu Deities. He is the central character of the immensely popular Hindu Scripture called the Bhagavad Gita (Song of God). Today his teachings and exploits are still widely celebrated by Hindus around the world.

Artists' Gallery is pleased to present "Radiance," an exhibition featuring the oil paintings of Maxine Shore and the photographs of Joseph DeFay.

Maxine is a contemporary colorist who uses color and light in an effort to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. Her paintings are in many private collections as well as prominent institutions. Formerly a teacher of art, Maxine has studied at various schools in New York and Philadelphia, including The Parsons School of Design, the National Academy and The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.

"I am not a traditional representational painter. I am more interested in how a place makes me feel than simply reproducing how it looks. Even when a painting is representational there exits an abstract dynamic below the surface. Exploring the interplay of shapes, patterns of lights and darks, and composition all contribute to the final outcome.

Joseph's photographs tend to pull out the simpler aspects of everyday life so they can be seen with a renewed beauty, and an exciting new perspective. "A completely open mind, favoring no particular philosophy, allows me to fully accept what each raw opportunity to create provides, and decide if it is to be refined and shared. Traditional artistic concerns prove an interesting challenge when capturing people, places, or objects in the moment, but are always held in high regard".
