OUTSIDE / INSIDE: Gail Bracegirdle and Mike Schweigart

"OUTSIDE / INSIDE"
featuring Gail Bracegirdle and Michael Schweigart
November 7 - December 1, 2013
Opening reception: Saturday, November 9, 2013, 5-8 pm

"Outside / Inside" reflects both Schweigart's landscape vistas in oil & acrylic, and Bracegirdle's garden views and still-life themes in watercolor. The Opening Reception will be Sat. Nov. 9, 5-8:00 pm.

Michael Schweigart's new paintings have a fresh approach with more emphasis on atmospheric conditions. They display layered variations of color and value forming subtle to dramatic cloudscapes. Visitors will see some unpolished drawings and plein air sketches, along with paintings completed in his studio.

Chinese fortunes were the inspirations for this new series of still life watercolors by Gail Bracegirdle. Most of the landscapes on exhibit were painted on location at private homes with her "Sunday in the Garden" group.

A closing 'Coffee & Conversation' reception will be Sunday, Dec. 1, 2-5pm.

Points of Origin: Beatrice Bork and Jennifer Cadoff

"Points of Origin"
featuring Beatrice Bork and Jennifer Cadoff
Oct 10 - Nov 3, 2013
Opening reception: Saturday, Oct 12, 4-7 pm

At first glance, there’s almost nothing similar about artists Beatrice Bork and Jennifer Cadoff, whose work is featured this month at the Artists’ Gallery in Lambertville. Bork paints stunningly detailed birds in watercolor; Cadoff creates minimalist abstract ink drawings and collages. But stay a while, and you, like these artists, will start to see the common ground from which their work springs: Both draw inspiration from the natural world, delight in form and texture, and pay particular attention to negative space in their often unusual compositions.

Beatrice Bork
"Turn, Turn, Turn"
watercolor

"Beatrice has an astonishing ability to combine very loose, free — I’d call it joyous — application of paint in the background of her pieces with precisely detailed renderings of her animal subjects — in this show, mostly birds. The result is not just beautiful, it’s unique, compelling and instantly recognizable," says Cadoff of Bork, adding, "You can feel Beatrice’s deep affinity with the natural world in every painting. It’s no wonder she’s a member of the prestigious Society of Animal Artists, and has won many awards, both regionally and nationally, for her work."

Jennifer Cadoff
"You Are Here"
pen & ink

Bork describes Cadoff’s work this way: "Jennifer's beautiful abstract drawings are music for the eyes, an intriguing compilation of small marks that coalesce into a rhythmic cohesion of texture and pattern that often call to mind organic elements. Lines become ripples on a sea, tiny circles are reminiscent of looking at cells under a microscope. Her collages are carefully choreographed, with simple lines and forms contrasting with her wonderful textures, working harmoniously in positive and negative compositions, giving yet more dimension to her art."

Come and meet the artists at the opening reception on Saturday, October 12, from 4 to 7 pm. They will also be at the gallery for "Coffee & Conversation" on Sunday, November 3, from 3 to 5 pm.

Proceeds will go to conservation, and Beatrice has also chosen the Asa Wright Nature Center, in Trinidad West Indies, where her piece was inspired. Trinidad holds a special place in her heart, as her first visit  of many visits was due to her award of the Don Eckelberry Scholarship. Mr. Eckelberry, a renowned bird artist, was instrumental in helping to create what is now known as the Asa Wright Nature Center, known for it's spectacular birding.

Concepts & Realizations: Alan J. Klawans and Andrew Werth

"Concepts Realizations"
featuring Alan J. Klawans and Andrew Werth
Sept 5 - Oct 6, 2013
Opening reception: Saturday, September 7, 4-7 pm

Artists' Gallery invites you to join us at the opening reception for our September 2013 exhibition, Concepts + Realizations, featuring the work of Alan J. Klawans and Andrew Werth. The free reception will be on Saturday, September 7, from 4 - 7pm (we're located at 18 Bridge Street, Lambertville, NJ).

Alan J. Klawans
"Normandie"
original digital print

This is the third year in a row that Klawans and Werth have exhibited together. While Alan and Andrew both conceive of their artwork through the lens of abstraction, the two realize their ideas using very different techniques.

Alan begins with photographs and digital scans of objects, textures, and colors from his travels around the world. "I think about some meaningful object or memory and then extrapolate that idea into something visually abstract," Klawans says. "For my print, Normandie, I was thinking about the colors, textures, and shapes of the most luxurious ocean liner of the art deco era." He then combines this imagery digitally with hand-drawn graphics, lines and shapes that provide structure as well as accent. The end result is a series of framed, limited edition digital prints that have both the crispness of digital creation and the visual texture of the real world.

Andrew Werth
"Arising #2"
acrylic on panel, 24 x 24

Andrew's acrylic paintings explore the interaction of color on multiple scales. His software engineering background comes in handy as he designs biomorphic compositions on the computer, often by simulating real-world biological processes and adding some artistic tweaks and twists along the way. After toning the support (this year, he's working on Dibond aluminum panels) and painting the base layers of the design, he proceeds to fill the surface with thousands of hand-painted marks of graduated color. If you've visited the gallery and wondered about Andrew's process, he recently put together a video on YouTube demonstrating the entire process from start to finish.

This show runs from September 5 through October 6, and the gallery now has extended operating hours (Thursday through Sunday from 11am - 6pm). We hope to see you there!

"Stories" - featuring Charles David Viera and Eric Rhinehart

"Stories"

featuring Charles David Viera and Eric Rhinehart
August 8 - September 1, 2013

Opening reception: Saturday, August 10, 4-8 pm

The sea, animal life and vivid colors set the narrative for "Stories" at the Artists' Gallery in Lambertville, featuring the work of Eric Rhinehart and Charles David Viera.

Not your typical regional artist, Eric Rhinehart delves into subjects that are far from his Summit, New Jersey home. Inspiration for his watercolors comes from travels to England, Spain and France, as well as Martha's Vineyard, the Chesapeake Bay and the Caribbean. "Beach Reading" is typical of Rhinehart's work—fluid and inviting. Exotic, yet familiar. "I try to balance the undercurrent relationship between color and light," said Rhinehart. "They each play an important role in describing the physical and emotional weight of my subjects."

Joining Eric Rhinehart in this exhibition is artist Charles David Viera. His bold color choices are a perfect compliment to Rhinehart's delicate and subtle use of watercolor. "My paintings derive more from Matisse than from your more traditional wildlife painters like James Audubon. These paintings translate the elegance, color and the anonymity of wildlife to a more personal color and compositional statement that I think the viewer will appreciate", says Viera.

Mr. Viera's work has been included in exhibitions at the First Street Gallery, the Adam Gimbel Gallery, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Nassau County Museum in N.Y. and locally at the Riverrun Gallery and Coryell Gallery in Lambertville NJ. An inspired educator, Charles is currently an instructor at the Arts Council of Princeton and the Hunterdon Art Museum.

Together, the works of Viera and Rhinehart offer a compelling exhibit, as each expands upon themes of beauty, serenity, wistfulness and joy in their own, unique way.

True Colors - featuring Charlie Katzenbach and Alla Podolsky

"True Colors"
featuring Charlie Katzenbach and Alla Podolsky
July 4 - August 4, 2013
Opening reception: Saturday, July 6, 5-9 pm
Closing reception: Sunday, August 4, 4-6 pm

"Artists are storytellers. And colors are our words." Those are the words of painter Alla Podolsky. She and Charlie Katzenbach have more than a few stories to share. Many will be on display in "True Colors," Katzenbach's and Podolsky's joint show running Thursday, July 4, through Sunday, August 4.

"Color is a universal thing," says Podolsky. "At the same time, it's incredibly personal. We have such visceral reactions to colors. We love some, we hate others. To an artist, color is a language. It's how we communicate. It's how we compose. It's how we translate. It's what connects all artists, no matter what the medium, or style, or form."

Katzenbach seems to chase the rainbow for this show. She paints boldly with the primary colors on glass planes in various geometric designs often reminiscent of Amish quilts. "I've been painting the spectrum for some time," Katzenbach says. "I try to capture the brilliant colors that I see as the crystals in my studio window break the light into its components. There is an exuberant joy in the cascade of colors that make up the rainbow. It is also a cultural and political symbol celebrating unity despite diversity for both the civil right and GLBT movement. As a person affected by both this means much to me."

The Trevor Project to Benefit
Katzenbach and Podolsky will donate a portion of the proceeds from sales of their work to The Trevor Project, the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth.

An opening reception will be held Saturday, July 6, from 5 to 9 pm. The artists will also host a closing reception from 4 to 6 pm on August 4. All are welcome!

Doug Sardo
"Sunlit Meadow"

Doug Sardo is attracted to the vibrant and exuberant colors that can be achieved through the media of pastel. He explores the dramatic contrast and luminescence of the shifting sunlight and patterns of shadows on the river and landscapes of the Delaware Valley. The painting "Sunlit Meadow", which won first prize for pastels at the Tinicum Arts Festival will be one of the paintings in the exhibit.

Joe Kazimierczyk
"Woodfern Sky"

Joe Kazimierczyk paints with oils in a style of traditional realism. In this exhibit, he focuses primarily on the farmlands and country roads of Hunterdon and Somerset Counties in New Jersey as he paints their cloud filled skies, the play of sunlight on old barns, and the glow of the late afternoon sun.

Closing Tea and Conversation: Sunday, May 5, 2013, 3-6pm

The Artists' Gallery's April showcase, "Patterns of Life", features the sculptural ceramic creations of Patricia Lange and watermedia paintings by Carol Sanzalone. Both artists share a creative delight in patterns, textures and colors and present an exciting showcase as featured artists for the month of April.

Pat Lange
"Labyrinth"

For Pat Lange, there is nothing better than having her hands deep in clay and transforming it into a wall piece or a large sculpture that profoundly satisfies her. Her source of inspiration is nature, the movement of the waves, the forms of the clouds, the ripples in the sand, the bark of the trees, the warmth and richness of nature's colors.

Carol Sanzalone
"The Color Underneath"

With watercolor and acrylic washes of color, Carol Sanzalone enlivens the graphic impact of the visual elements in her paintings. Using realistic subjects and experimental images, her paintings concentrate on light, color, texture and the patterns they create.

Together, the artists present the exciting showcase of the "Patterns of Life".
