Also this weekend, Artists' Gallery is participating in "Wine & Design", an event where over 40 Lambertville art galleries, antique shops and home design stores will open their doors, offering guests a glass of wine and an invitation to explore the world of art and home design.  The event takes place Saturday, Nov 1, 2014 from 3-9 pm (rain date Sunday, Nov 2).   Please check the Lambertville Area Chamber of Commerce website for further information and the latest update on any rain date rescheduling.

"Wine & Design" is free and open to the public.   Maps will be available at all participating merchants so you can pick up your map when you visit Artists' Gallery.

A Sculptor's Alchemy and the Color-Palette of an Impressionist

Émile Zola once famously summed the lifetime work of an artist up in four words: "to live out loud." On October 11th, from 4 to 7 pm Lambertville-based Artists' Gallery invites the public to celebrate a lifetime of evocative works by two celebrated artists, metal sculptor and potter, Patricia Lange and pastel artist, Doug Sardo. This autumn showcase captures decades of study, experimentation and the creative presence of two artists whose collective work has been exhibited and published everywhere from the Metropolitan Museum of Art to Grounds-for Sculpture; from Bristol Myers Squibb to the Museum of Modern Art. 

Born in Santiago, Chile and a resident of Hopewell, NJ, sculptor and enamelist Patricia Lange--a former accountant who sees parallels in exactitude in her enamel work, spent many years moonlighting as a metal sculptor--as well as a committed teacher who instructed blind students at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Lange has worked with almost every material imaginable, metal scraps and found materials, as well as wall-sized pieces of aluminum, steel, and copper--and her works have been exhibited at the Grounds for Sculpture and purchased by Bristol Myers Squibb. In 2003, she voiced the experimental approach that marked her bold signature style throughout her career no matter the medium. "I'm not afraid to ruin a piece...."

For plein-air painter and pastel artist, Bucks-County resident Doug Sardo, whose designs have been published by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, color and light blend magically in Delaware-River Valley landscapes - thick trees, covered bridges, watery shadows and layered skies. Inspired by the natural world, Sardo draws from over 300 shades of color and demonstrates the trained eye and palette of an impressionist. Using some of the discoveries made by the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, Sardo composes paintings filled with evocative color and life. 

The showcase of Then and Now will display both former and current works of Lange and Sardo.

Artists' Gallery is pleased to present "Sunshine & Joy", an exhibition featuring the sun-filled paintings of Douglas Sardo and Joe Kazimierczyk. Both artists draw their inspiration from painting outdoors, and their exhibition captures the sense of joy found in the sunlit places of this region.

Doug Sardo is attracted to the vibrant and exuberant colors that can be achieved through the media of pastel. He explores the dramatic contrast and luminescence of the shifting sunlight and patterns of shadows on the river and landscapes of the Delaware Valley. The painting "Sunlit Meadow", which won first prize for pastels at the Tinicum Arts Festival will be one of the paintings in the exhibit.

"Woodfern Sky"

Joe Kazimierczyk paints with oils in a style of traditional realism. In this exhibit, he focuses primarily on the farmlands and country roads of Hunterdon and Somerset Counties in New Jersey as he paints their cloud filled skies, the play of sunlight on old barns, and the glow of the late afternoon sun.

Walk into the Artists' Gallery (18 Bridge Street, Lambertville) this month, and be prepared to feast your eyes on two very different takes on contemporary art in "Double Vision," featuring Jennifer Cadoff and Doug Sardo.

"Autumn Canal Walk"

Doug Sardo's medium is pastel, and he revels in sumptuous color. For this show, Sardo continues to draw upon the beautiful local landscape around his Buck's County home for inspiration, but with a new twist: "Instead of making a single painting on location, I've been working in the studio on three variations of each of five different scenes," Sardo explains. "It's been exciting to explore the ways in which subtle changes -- color choices, for example, or different ways of applying pigment to paper -- can have an enormous impact on a painting's visual and emotional resonance."

While Princeton NJ artist Jennifer Cadoff also works in series, almost everything else about her work in this show stands in stark contrast to Sardo's: It is black and white, abstract, and minutely detailed. Cadoff uses the repetition of tiny distinctive marks (lines, circles, scribbling) to build her drawings in black ink on creamy watercolor paper. Some of the works on display are large and deceptively simple -- for example, a 22 x 30 inch sheet is covered with delicate parallel lines, producing the impression of moving water. Other pieces are layered and collaged, and a few include recognizable flower and leaf forms. Says Cadoff of this new direction in her work, "I've been having fun cutting and ripping my large drawings, then playing with the pieces to see how interact they with one another."

Coffee and Conversation with Bracegirdle and Sardo

Gail Bracegirdle and Doug Sardo will be holding a “Coffee and Conversation” reception at the Artists’ Gallery, 18 Bridge Street, Lambertville, New Jersey on Sunday, November 6 from 1 to 4. Both artists will be in the gallery to discuss the techniques and inspirations for their work on display. Homemade cakes and pastries and freshly brewed coffee and beverages will be served.

“I hope you will drop by the gallery and see my watercolors,” says Bracegirdle, “I’ve been exploring a new approach, I call it ‘crinkle paper’. It’s a delightful effect achieved by soaking and crumpling the watercolor paper. When the paint is applied, it will take to the paper in unexpected — and uncontrolled — ways, somewhat like batik in fabric. “The spontaneity of it is really exciting,” she says. “You never know quite what you’ll get.”

Sardo, a pastel artist, explains “my work is always evolving,” the calligraphic lines of his previous paintings have morphed into softer surfaces in his latest work. “I’ve been painting along the Delaware Canal in Uhlerstown. It is a fantastic cluster of historic buildings and the only covered bridge over the Delaware Canal. It is a wonderful place to paint outside”.

You might think you know Gail Bracegirdle's and Doug Sardo's work. Perhaps you've enjoyed Bracegirdle's elegant florals or light-handed still lifes of sun-dappled fruits and vegetables. Once you've seen them you will immediately recognize Sardo's luminous landscapes emerging from calligraphic swirls of mauve, emerald, ocher, and scarlet.

Well, forget what you think you know, because both artists are eager to show you something new.

"I hope my work is always evolving," says Sardo, a plein air painter who works in pastels. "It should evolve." By way of evidence, the calligraphic lines of his previous paintings have morphed into softer surfaces in his latest work.

"The technique is called 'sfmuato' from the Italian word 'to smoke'. It means that there are no harsh outlines, areas blend into one another which makes for a slightly hazy, more realistic, depiction of light and color", explains Sardo.

"I'm always looking for a new approach," exclaims Bracegirdle, who notes she is adding a new wrinkle to her watercolors.

Maybe you live here, in the Delaware River Valley. Or perhaps you visit often. Like so many others, you may be well acquainted with the historic towns and farmsteads, the streams and rivers, bridges and byways. Nonetheless, rest assured that what you believe to be familiar you’ll find fresh and new again in the oils of Jo-Ann Osnoe and pastels of Doug Sardo.

The proof is on display in their new show, “Familiar Places,” at Artists’ Gallery in Lambertville.

“Jo-Ann and Doug deliver remarkably fresh perspectives on the iconic scenery of the region,” said Gallery spokesperson Laurie Nicholson. “Their insight is genuinely earned, too. Few artists are as committed to working on the scene, in the environment as Jo-Ann and Doug are. They are, frankly, part of the local landscape themselves.”

“Familiar Places” runs Friday, November 5 through Sunday, December 5. Three Gallery events will offer the public multiple opportunities to become familiar with Osnoe and Sardo and their work: The artists will host an opening reception Saturday, November 6, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. They will also be present for a “Meet the Artists” evening on Saturday, November 13, from 6 to 9 p.m. Finally, the show will close on Sunday, December 5, with “Coffee & Conversation” 2 to 5 p.m.

Alla Podolsky’s oil paintings are a collection of new works, informed by a very personal perspective on universal themes: home, memory, internal versus external, close and remote. “The paintings are about seeing the world through the eyes of the child I once was, and seeing through the eyes of the adult I became. It's about losing home and finding it in unexpected places.”

Doug Sardo’s pastel paintings are vibrant impressionist interpretations of regional landscapes, rural architecture and river valley scenes. His paintings juxtapose brilliant complimentary colors and dynamic compositions that allow the viewers eye to blend the colors and travel into the painting. The exhibit will include new paintings from his plein aire painting excursions on the Amalfi coast, Italy, on the Polynesian islands of Raiatea and Moorea and the seaside town of Gloucester Massachusetts.

Both artists deal with similar themes in different, personal ways.

Also, an image of Doug Sardo's pastel painting of the Mill was used for this years poster - that's the 2nd year in a row that Artists' Gallery members' work has been used for the poster - last year it was Kazimierczyk's image of the mill.

The Phillips Mill 79th Annual Juried Exhibition runs Sept 20 through Oct 25, 2008. The Mill is located at 2619 River Road (Rt 32) about 1 1/2 miles north of New Hope, Pa. and is open daily from 1 to 5 pm.

March Show: Line and Light

"Line and Light" is a first! This month, the Artists' Gallery introduces their newest member: pastel painter Doug Sardo, whose dancing ribbons of color will delight your eyes and thrill your soul. The contrast between Doug's color-saturated paintings and that of co-exhibitor Jennifer Cadoff's beguilingly offbeat black-and-white drawings is startling and serves to highlight the unique strengths of each artist.

Doug Sardo is a former graphic artist who now paints with pastels full time. He captures his subjects – the reflective light on the Delaware, the wind moving through an ancient Sycamore, a red pickup truck mired in snow – on location near his Upper Black Eddy, PA, home. He uses color as an impressionist, juxtaposing complimentary hues that blend in the viewer’s eye. "I paint the color of the light in a scene, not the actual objects," says Mr. Sardo. "I work the pastels in layers, on sanded paper from Australia, which I mount on board. This allows me to hold and move the painting as I work on it. I never use an easel – it separates me from the creative process." Doug’s graphic artwork has been published by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York and he has painted many "treasure hunts" in Venice for longtime client Save Venice.

Princeton, NJ, artist Jennifer Cadoff is also inspired by everyday sights – horses in a field, an armful of pussy willows from the grocery store, bits of tree trimmings pocketed on a walk. "I like to come at my subjects from an unusual angle, or change their scale, or crop them tight, so that things one would usually pass by without a second thought are presented as I see them: Beautiful and worthy of consideration," says Ms. Cadoff. She simplifies forms into areas of tiny dots, black scribble, and the white of untouched paper. "I've actually been asked if I buy paper with dots and scribbles and collage them together," she says with a laugh, "but no, each piece is entirely hand-drawn. My obsessive personality is on display." Ms Cadoff’s award-winning art is often seen in regional juried shows, including those at Newark’s City Without Walls, Phillips Mill in New Hope PA, Perkins Center for the Arts in Moorestown NJ, the Philadelphia Sketch Club and the Philadelphia Watercolor Society, of which she is a signature member. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Mercer County Cultural and Heritage Commission.

New Member: Doug Sardo

The Artists' Gallery welcomes our newest member, Doug Sardo, a pastel artist who can often be spotted painting his works on location in the rural Bucks County countryside. Doug will be having a 2 person show with Jennifer Cadoff at the Artists' Gallery in March - we'll be posting more about that very soon.

The gallery is also sad to see Nancy Shill depart but we wish her best of luck in her new ventures!
