Materese Roche, one of the artists here at the Artists Gallery in Lambertville, has been juried into the Doylestown Bicentennial Art Exhibition at Gratz Gallery, 63 South Main Street, Doylestown, PA 18901:

Featuring paintings from top artists and their interpretation of the impact of our landscape and community over the past 200 years by having Doylestown as the county seat. Our judges are accomplished painters Kerry Dunn and Karen Titus Smith and Manhattan art consultant Tarah Murphy. Come to Gratz Gallery between May 23 and June 1 to vote for your favorite painting for the People’s Choice Award! This award, along with others including Best of Show, will be announced on June 1st during First Friday. Gratz Gallery and Conservation Studio is located on 68 South Main Street, Doylestown, PA 18901. Gallery Hours: Wednesdays through Saturdays 10 am to 6 pm and Sundays from 12 Noon to 6 pm.

Materese Roche presents a series of expansive sky paintings which are inspired by the compositions and classical techniques of the past. Alla Podolsky's psychological and narrative paintings, in contrast, show people in their environments, often in a city or town setting. Together, they join forces to present "Inside Out - Reflections of Human Experience in the Environment".

"The question is not what you look at, but what you see."

Henry David Thoreau wrote that in his famous journal 160 years ago this month. Artists Paul Grecian and Materese Roche honor the spirit of Thoreau's vision with their own interpretation in their new joint show, "A Sense of Place". The collection of new landscapes, skyscapes and waterscapes debuts Friday, August 5, and will be on display through Monday, September 5 at the Artists' Gallery. Grecian, a photographer and Roche, who works in oils, will host an opening reception Saturday, August 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Gallery. During the reception, they will reveal the results of a collaborative project, designed for this show.

Grecian and Roche will each create a work based on one pre-determined image. The artists have selected one 'neutral' image which they will individually interpret, in their respective mediums. They will translate the scene, bringing to it their individual emotional responses, creativity and vision. It's a logical extension of Grecian and Roche's shared aesthetic and a reflection of Thoreau's quote.

Both artists have had the experience of people connecting to their work as specific places they know and have a deep emotional response to. "However" says Grecian "those are often not the places we've depicted, I believe this suggests we have managed to tap into some universal experience of the landscape".

Materese's and Paul's work transcends paint and paper, surface and image, as well as the specifics of time and place. It connects you to the essence and universality of the natural world. See it in person and there's no denying its power.

A side-by-side exhibition featuring the area’s premier contemporary painters and the masters of American art who came before them.

Gratz Gallery has organize an exhibition featuring works by the area’s most prestigious and talented contemporary artists, side-by-side with Pennsylvania Impressionists, The Philadelphia Ten and painters from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. The exhibition, Now & Then, seeks to delineate the push-and-pull of influence and autonomy between the gifted painters of today and the masters of American Art who came before them. The show will include paintings by more than a dozen contemporary painters, including Artists' Gallery's Materese Roche.

The exhibition will run from March 14 through April 18, 2010. An opening reception for the exhibition will be held on March 13, from 6pm to 9pm. A snow date is scheduled for the following day, March 14, from 3 to 6 pm.

Artists Gail Bracegirdle, Joe Kazimierczyk, Materese Roche and Doug Sardo will be exhibiting at Riverrun Gallery's First Annual Plein Air Invitational. Gallery owner Ty Hodanish invited some of the region's finest plein air painters to participate in this show, which will feature 18 artists in total.

Artists Gallery at Pinot to Picasso 2009

Artists' Gallery is well represented at this year's Pinot to Picasso - the Arts Council of Princeton's annual art and wine tasting fund raiser. This gala kick-off to the Princeton Arts Weekend and Communiversity Festival of the Arts has been described as "the liveliest and hippest art related event in Princeton" - so how can you miss that?!

The event takes place on Friday evening, April 24 and includes an exciting selection of foods donated by select local restaurants, and a tasting of wines from around the world. Also included are a wine-related Silent Auction, and a “Wine Grab.” But the highlight of the evening is the Art Tombola, a raffle of approximately 80 works of art contributed by a select group of local artists. The first show of the Artists’ Gallery’s season features two artists working on separate planes, with different visions who are bound by parallels in techniques and the ability to draw the viewer into their work. The Charles Katzenbach and Materese Roche show “Prisms of Perception” opens Friday, April 10th, and the artist’s reception will be held on Saturday, April 18th from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. The exhibit runs through May 3rd, 2009.

For Katzenbach and Roche, visual depth and interest is achieved through the use of multiple layers of shifting light and colors, lending atmosphere and movement to their work.

Katzenbach creates abstract paintings with oil on the surfaces of glass or mirrors, often using multiple panes to increase the depth and complexity of the image. Colors and shapes shift as one moves around the work, literally playing with the viewer’s perceptions. His work has been referred to as “a legal high with paint, color and light as stimulus”.

Roche paints in a contemporary representational manner, but like Katzenbach, she is fascinated with the play of natural light and atmosphere and how opposing forces in a painting can create a sensation of vibration or tranquility, depending upon the subject. For Roche, the driving force is to pull you into the subject and create within you a specific feeling – from the cool morning air and shimmering light in Northern Maine to the sensation of mist at it flows through a grove of bamboo.

Please note that because it's Easter weekend, the opening is not being held on Second Saturday. Instead, the opening reception for this show will be on Saturday April 18th from 6 to 9:00 pm.

Three New Members

We've had 3 new artists joining the gallery this fall, Bonnie Schorske, Andrew Werth and Materese Roche. Bonnie has been with us a few months now, Andrew joined last month, and Materese will join us this week, so be sure to come to our December Open House Holiday Party on Saturday, Dec 13 to meet our new members and to see their work. As usual, the reception will run from 6 to 9pm.
