by Florence Moonan

Florence Moonan, best known for her colorful abstract acrylic paintings, will be showing charcoal drawings using methods of mark making taught at Bunker Hill Studio workshops by renowned painter, Pat Martin. She will also be exhibiting dramatic poured works in oil. These techniques, when applied by Moonan’s bold movements, show ingenuity and a fresh inventiveness that makes the works in this show grab your attention.

"Northern Lights"
by Carol Sanzalone

Carol Sanzalone, working in watercolor and acrylic on paper and canvas, captures the graphic impact of light and shadows to create surfaces and color patterns that enrich the everyday images that inspire her work. Her artistic journey has included many years of experimenting with color and texture, and these recent innovative paintings will be a major part of the work included in this show.

Both New Jersey natives, Moonan and Sanzalone, find the diverse cultural, historical and natural beauty of the region continually stimulates their creative endeavors. This is evident when viewing the two artists' work side by side. Sanzalone's paintings respond to the environment, while Moonan's works are largely drawn on autobiographical experiences.

Artists Gallery at Pinot to Picasso 2009

Artists' Gallery is well represented at this year's Pinot to Picasso - the Arts Council of Princeton's annual art and wine tasting fund raiser. This gala kick-off to the Princeton Arts Weekend and Communiversity Festival of the Arts has been described as "the liveliest and hippest art related event in Princeton" - so how can you miss that?!

The event takes place on Friday evening, April 24 and includes an exciting selection of foods donated by select local restaurants, and a tasting of wines from around the world. Also included are a wine-related Silent Auction, and a “Wine Grab.” But the highlight of the evening is the Art Tombola, a raffle of approximately 80 works of art contributed by a select group of local artists. Below are the works donated by Artists' Gallery members:

Hunterdon: Inside and Out

Florence Moonan's painting "Dorothy Fields and Me: Doin' What Comes Natur'lly" was accepted into the Hunterdon County Cultural and Heritage Commission’s juried exhibition called Hunterdon: Inside and Out: The Artist Views Hunterdon County. The jurors were renowned artists Nessa Grainger and James Toogood. The piece was selected for the Stanley and Nancy Baron award for painting.

Dorothy Fields and Me: "Doin' What Comes Natur'lly"

acrylic and mixed media collage by
Florence Moonan

Artists were "encouraged to think beyond the traditional pastoral landscape and to paint the mood of Hunterdon as well as its reality." This piece, completed in 2008, is devoted to my memories of St. John Terrell’s famed Lambertville Music Circus, a major cultural attraction in Hunterdon County from 1949 to 1970. Annie Get Your Gun was the first show in which my sister, Joyce, and I had minor roles. One side of this piece is dedicated to Dorothy Fields who wrote the libretto for Annie Get Your Gun, and the other records my experience with the Music Circus. This early connection with the theater has been a driving force for my creative endeavors as a visual artist.

This painting is a mixed media two-sided folding book on canvas and watercolor paper. (Six panels.)

Hidden Garden of Lambertville 2008

Just as last year, Artist's Gallery artists teamed up with the Kalmia Club, and many of us were out painting on the Hidden Gardens of Lambertville Tour this weekend. And just like last year, we'll be having a special exhibit of these paintings in the fall with a portion of the sales going to benefit the Kalmia Club for all of the charity work that they do. (You'll hear more about that in September or October.)

Here are a few images of the artists in action - photos courtesy John Treichler, our gallery photographer, who forgot to take his self portrait for us to share with you:

The food spread at this opening was a work of art in itself!

At the end of the day, Florence had a lot more energy left than Alan, but these events can be a bit tiring for the artists.

Hope to see you at our next opening.

April Show - Realizations: Ideas That Became Art.

New works by: Alan J. Klawans and Florence Moonan

Opening Reception: Saturday, April 12, from 4 to 9 pm
Show Dates: April 11 through May 4, 2008

Alan Klawans and Florence Moonan will be exhibiting their latest "ideas that became art" at Artists' Gallery.

Alan Klawans' images for this show were created on his computer. Most of his work is autobiographical. The prints are recollections of past events, family members, fishing trips, travel adventures, movies, flea market experiences related to his collections, and walks through the neighborhood in which he lives.

The pieces in the "Realization Series" are small-scale works inspired by a map drawing with ink on paper that he had made a few years ago. He combined sections of the map drawing with other graphic material and computer drawing to create these prints. Other prints in this exhibition were created by working with postage stamps, scraps of metal, tools and other objects that found their way into his studio.

Abstract painter, Florence Moonan was born in Trenton, New Jersey and raised in Lambertville among a family of artists. Her father encouraged her by giving her a new set of acrylic paints. Through painting she discovered a new way of expressing her ideas and her emotions. Inspired by the spirit of music, her first painting series recalled childhood performances in the Lambertville Music Circus. Music continues to inspire her as she works through the painting process. "When I listen to the music of Puccini, I'm transported. If I can’t sing it, I’ll paint it."

Facing only a blank canvas and surrounded by her paints, brushes, and knives she intuitively feels her way through the work. Add to this, her interest in texture and experimentation, combined with her beliefs, attitudes, and history, and the realization of an emotionally charged canvas is born as she scratches, wipes, sprays, builds up and rubs away at the surface. She often takes the inspiration of a successful piece into the creation of a series and produces additional works until the possibilities are exhausted. A bundle of ladies handkerchiefs stored among family mementos were the impetus for the pieces in this show.

November show: Journeys in Color

The power of color is clearly demonstrated at Artists' Gallery where two regional artists, Sheila Letven and Florence Moonan are showing their expressive art from November 9 through December 2, 2007. The public is invited to meet the artists at an opening reception on Saturday, November 10, 6 - 9 p.m.

Both award-winning painters share a mutual interest in the process of exploring color and texture as a means of personal expression.

"Starburst"
oil by Sheila Letven

Multimedia artist Letven is showing oils on canvas along with small circus and box constructions. Her subjects have appeared and reappeared constantly throughout her work. Natural forms, wild animals, circus figures, and landscapes with intertwining plants have been entry points, but the start is not particularly the direction a painting will go; it often surprises her and takes a different route. For Letven, painting is like a journey into color and dreams, where one is alternately a participant as well as a spectator.

“Starting out with each new canvas and ending up with an unexpected surprise is exactly what the journey is all about,” she explained.

"Speranza Mia"
Mixed Media by Florence Moonan

Moonan’s works add another dimension to the Xing Series a body of work painted in her earthy and emblematic abstract expressionist style.

“I was looking for inspiration when I pulled out the torn and tattered Italian grammar book my mother gave me when I was a young girl,” she said. The book, written in the early 20th century, contained a chapter with examples of common and useful Italian and English letters. Moonan adds, “Of particular interest to me were the love letters flavored with archaic expressions which reminded me of little operas.”

This tactile connection to her past made an immediate impact on the direction of her work. The painting’s two dramatic central panels are set between harmonious panels on either side like theater curtains or book covers.
