Surroundings
Claudia Fouse Fountaine and Bill Jersey
August 8 - September 1, 2024
Opening Reception: Saturday, August 10, 5-7 pm
This month, Artists' Gallery presents "Surroundings," featuring Bill Jersey and Claudia Fouse Fountaine. Their last exhibit together highlighted travels around the world and views of different countries; colorful as well as exotic. "Surroundings" brings the focus closer to home, to what we see around us every day. It turns out it can be as inspirational as anything else if we take the time to look carefully.
At the age of 97, Bill Jersey still explores life with what he calls a fresh eye. "If you think you've seen this before," he says, "you're not paying attention." A Country Road invites an encounter with a new world. The leafless tree suggests a life well lived. We are surrounded by rich memories. I choose to preserve them with paint and brush.
Claudia Fountaine is intrigued by the quirky and the mundane; a snowman in an icy backyard, with skeleton tree branches for arms. The shelves in a garage, overflowing with all manner of strange things. A dog relaxing on the patio in his bright blue e-collar. These are some of the "surroundings" Fountaine has chosen to depict.
"Surroundings" will be at Artists’ Gallery from August 8th through September 1st. The Opening is Saturday, August 10th from 5-7pm.

Exhibit: - July 6 to August 6
Opening Reception: Saturday, July 15, 4-7 pm
Photographing subjects up close, Joseph DeFay provides the ability to see details that would not ordinarily be noticed. His intention is to compel each viewer to linger with the same vision that he enjoys behind the lens: the interplay between vibrant colors and that special quality of light. DeFay spends a great deal of time with composition, searching for the precise arrangement of the subject. The work allows him to preserve these moments and share these valuable experiences with others.
As a painter, DeFay creates colorful abstract paintings that seek to reconnect with a sense of play and embrace the unexpected. He enjoys working in the abstract expressionist style for its looseness freedom, and the elements of surprise. He is fascinated by the ways abstraction allows for the individual interpretation by each viewer. Seeing that connection happen is one of the highlights of being an abstract artist.
Residing in beautiful Hunterdon County, New Jersey, Bill Jersey is surrounded by creeks, forests, fields and hills—an abundance of scenes he wants to capture or interpret on canvas. Over time his paintings evolved from more realistic scenes of the natural world to more interpreted representations, using dramatic colors to evoke fresh perspectives. As a documentary filmmaker of many years he learned to catch a moment in time and use it to tell a larger story. That is what he seeks to capture in his paintings.
Jersey has produced and directed award-winning documentary films for network television for over 50 years. Eventually his focus shifted to painting landscapes, and when he turned 91, he became a painter full time. He paints every day in his studio in Lambertville, New Jersey.

Along the Road
Bill Jersey and Michael Schweigart
Exhibit: September 8 - October 2, 2022
Opening Reception: Saturday, September 10, 5-8 pm
Bill Jersey and Michael Schweigart bring together two different
approaches to painting the landscape, and their impact together is
dynamic. Bill’s bold impressionistic color harmonies and broad brushwork
excite the senses, and his color and light patterns create complex
compositions. While Michael’s palette is subtle with natural colors
blending light and shadow that build texture and develop detail. “Along
the Road” brings together the best of both styles with compelling scenes
of their time and places.

Heather Barros and Bill Jersey train their eye upon an inhabited
landscape, albeit a landscape momentarily void of inhabitants.
We understand that this is a populated environment because we see traces
of human endeavor - paths, bridges, buildings, and the like.
Neither artist obligates her or himself to a literal representation, and
both are willing to edit an element whenever it benefits her or his
composition.
Thus both paint expressively.
Yet each sees in a very different way.
This allows us, as viewers, to better appreciate how perception is
diffracted through the lens of creativity.
Bill Jersey paints more boldly, generally on larger canvases and with a surreal palette.
His color choices may be grounded in reality, but what we see is the product of an inspired imagination.
Heather Barros paints on a more intimate, human scale.
While her canvases vary in size, with several comparable to those of Bill Jersey's, their feeling is entirely different.
For her, landscape is a metaphor for her surroundings as much as it is a state of mind.
Please note that there is no opening reception for this exhibit
due to social distancing recommendations. The gallery will be open our regular hours and we hope that you can visit us.
