Chromatic Wanderings - the art of Carol Sanzalone and Andrew Werth

Chromatic Wanderings
Carol Sanzalone and Andrew Werth

Exhibit: November 7 - December 1
Opening Reception: Saturday, November 9, 1-3 pm

This November, Artists’ Gallery invites art enthusiasts to embark on a visual journey through ‘Chromatic Wanderings,’ an exhibition featuring the distinctive works of Carol Sanzalone and Andrew Werth. The show promises a unique exploration of nature’s patterns through two contrasting artistic perspectives. Both draw inspiration from the natural world, yet their approaches couldn’t be more different. Sanzalone's watercolor and acrylic paintings capture the interplay of light and shadow in the Delaware Valley, while Werth's intricate acrylic works delve into the realm of 'organized organic abstraction.'

Carol Sanzalone works in watercolor and acrylic to create paintings inspired by the colors and patterns of light she observes in nature. Graphic shapes from warm sunlight and cool shadows evoke images associated with seasons, times, and places. Her experience in printmaking with both silkscreen and lithography creatively informs and enriches her current work. "This exhibition is a celebration of color and form," says Sanzalone. "I hope visitors will see the familiar landscapes of our region in a new light."

Andrew Werth returns to Artists’ Gallery this year with acrylic paintings comprised of hundreds of hand-painted maze-like marks where subtle color gradations interact to produce a sense of depth and luminosity. A new series of six ‘Mind Wandering’ paintings span the chromatic spectrum and include symmetric forms with a perspectival tilt. This show also includes several new paintings from his ‘Elusive’ series, inspired by concepts from philosophy of mind. "My work invites viewers to both lose themselves in the details and to step back to take in the larger patterns of color," Werth adds.

Not to Be Forgotten - the art of Alla Podolsky and Laura Rutherford Renner

Not to Be Forgotten
Alla Podolsky and Laura Rutherford Renner

Exhibit: October 10 - November 3
Opening Reception: Sunday, October 13, 2-4 pm

Announcing "Not to Be Forgotten," a new exhibit of paintings by Laura Rutherford Renner and Alla Podolsky.

Laura Rutherford Renner, from Collingswood, NJ, enjoys painting figures engaged in the experience of their environments. Her work has been recently described as "Bold, brave, and a true voice." Renner states: "Capturing contemporary life snapshots in two dimensions is an exercise in problem solving and creativity. I enjoy mixing pure colors, keeping my palette simple to create authentic observation. The quiet engagement of brush to palette and brush to board provides daily calm and purpose". Laura, an occupational therapist for the past 27 years, has recently retired from this important work. She lives with her husband, their child, and their snarky, beloved cat, Lulu.

"As a figurative painter, I am, essentially, a memory keeper" says Philadelphia artist Alla Podolsky. "I paint people, places, and events that are ‘etched in ember’ of my perception. People I loved and lost, experiences that stayed with me, moments that I want to revisit again and again—my work is a way of keeping them all. Color, light, composition are my means of staying connected. It’s both intensely personal to me and largely universal." A native of Kiyv, Ukraine, Alla Podolsky traces her love of psychological painting to that ancient city’s iconography and rich narrative traditions. Her work is a combination of her European sensibilities and her American experiences.

Progressions - the art of Alan Klawans and Larry Mitnick

Progressions
Alan Klawans and Larry Mitnick

Exhibit: September 5 - October 6
Opening Reception: Saturday, September 7, 4-7 pm

Artist's Gallery is pleased to present "Progressions," an exhibition showcasing the work of Alan Klawans and Larry Mitnick.

Klawans' digital abstractions are often informed by his observations. His inspiration comes from his daily life, his family, people he has known, books, movies and television. The ordering of visual elements such as points, lines, planes, volumes and color create rhythmic progressions. Our eyes move left and right, up and down, along and into lines that define symmetric and asymmetric compositions.

In contrast to Klawans' digital prints, Mitnick's works are hand painted, acrylic paintings. One discovers in each abstract piece a unique set of spatial, formal and color progressions, often inspired by nature. We are presented with a variety of compositions that explore animated edges and voided centers, as well as rotating and layered movement. Contrasting hard-edged opaque and transparent forms with textured brushwork Mitnick excites our eyes, mind and imagination.

Both artists rely on the viewer to complete the experience. The viewer is invited to daydream and wonder, venturing into a creative dialogue with the work.

Surroundings - the art of Claudia Fouse Fountaine and Bill Jersey

Surroundings
Claudia Fouse Fountaine and Bill Jersey
August 8 - September 1, 2024
Opening Reception: Saturday, August 10, 5-7 pm

This month, Artists' Gallery presents "Surroundings," featuring Bill Jersey and Claudia Fouse Fountaine. Their last exhibit together highlighted travels around the world and views of different countries; colorful as well as exotic. "Surroundings" brings the focus closer to home, to what we see around us every day. It turns out it can be as inspirational as anything else if we take the time to look carefully.

At the age of 97, Bill Jersey still explores life with what he calls a fresh eye. "If you think you've seen this before," he says, "you're not paying attention." A Country Road invites an encounter with a new world. The leafless tree suggests a life well lived. We are surrounded by rich memories. I choose to preserve them with paint and brush.

Claudia Fountaine is intrigued by the quirky and the mundane; a snowman in an icy backyard, with skeleton tree branches for arms. The shelves in a garage, overflowing with all manner of strange things. A dog relaxing on the patio in his bright blue e-collar. These are some of the "surroundings" Fountaine has chosen to depict.

"Surroundings" will be at Artists’ Gallery from August 8th through September 1st. The Opening is Saturday, August 10th from 5-7pm.

Please visit the event website for additional information.

April 4 to May 5, 2024
Opening Reception: Saturday, April 6, 5:30 - 7:30 pm

Artistic Innovation and Nature's Splendor: A Unique Approach to Animal and Landscape Connections

Beatrice Bork delves deeper into nature close to heart and home in this exhibit. Her watercolors go beyond her meticulously rendered subjects, with underlying themes that make her art both poetic and captivating. In regard to her work, she comments, "The careful rendering of my subject and it’s character, for me, is a reflection of love and respect I have for animals. The themes in my paintings are imbued with personal reflection—and tend to resonate with nostalgia, humor, hope or a moment in time."

Michael Schweigart explores new dimensions in artistic processes, particularly in the early stages of painting. His intricate landscapes and seascapes, are rooted in familiar scenes, and take on a breathtakingly fresh perspective. Schweigart combines multiple views of a scene, remaining true to the essence of the place. In his own words, "Some of the work I have for this show involves new ways in the process... My goal is to pay more attention to space, atmosphere and light with the result of added depth and a moody luminous quality to the work."

Don't miss the chance to experience the beauty of nature through the eyes of these two exceptional artists.
