Internal / External contrasts the abstract internal "mindscapes" of Andrew Werth with the external urban industrial landscapes of Marc Reed.

"The Reality Problem"

Andrew Werth's abstract paintings focus on issues of perception, consciousness, and the philosophy of mind. Using thousands of hand-painted marks of varying colors on multiple layers of paint, he creates pieces where the perceptual experience is often the subject of the paintings. Through the careful interplay of color between foreground and background, his paintings possess a visual depth that belies their generally flat surfaces.

"Reach"

Marc Reed looks outward towards the American industrial landscape in representational paintings of scenes in and around New Jersey. Using traditional oil and charcoal painting techniques, he captures the aesthetic quality of urban decay with angled lighting, gritty texture, and atmospheric skies.

Color, Line, and Light - the Riverside Symphonia

Riverside Symphonia, Delaware Valley's own orchestra, is having a world premiere of a new orchestral work by composer Robert Maggio (1999 Fellow), inspired by the Impressionist landscape painters of the Delaware Valley. The work will be performed along with video projections showing the works of several local artists.

Gallery members Marc Reed and Joe Kazimierczyk will be among the artists whose work was selected to accompany this performance. Marc Reed, who is well known for his documentary films of local landmarks, was chosen to produce the video that will serve as a backdrop for the concert:

July show: House of Dreams

Marc Reed and Alla Podolsky are the featured artists this July at The Artists' Gallery. Their show, entitled "House Of Dreams", runs July 11 through August 3, 2008. Opening reception is Saturday, July 12 from 6 - 9 pm.

Reed, who typically exhibits his oil paintings, will be exhibiting selections from his photographic body of work.

"I've been taking photographs for years" says Reed. "Each winter for the last three years I chose a different abandoned location to document."

Reed will be exhibiting photographs from various locations including an abandoned steel mill, paper mill and an abandoned mental institution he documented over winter 2008. In addition to his photography, he has produced and directed 3 short films that are available on DVD.

"For me" says Reed, "House of Dreams is a reference to these places, once bustling with life, but now engaged in a long sleep and filling visitors' heads with dreams of what was."

For Alla Podolsky House of Dreams is about the shape and structure of memory. The beauty of it is manifested by brightness and color, and its sadness comes in form of distorted and often broken angles and muted shadows. The paintings are juxtapositions of old and new, remembered and lost, romanticized and real, reflected and direct, internal and external, seen and perceived.

The work is very personal, but, hopefully, universal in that we all revisit the past, always looking at it from different angles our ever changing perspectives provide. We all see old things with new eyes and take walks in our private house of dreams.

The Papermill at River Moon Film Festival

Multi-talented gallery artist and president Marc Reed will be screening his latest film The Papermill this weekend at The River Moon Film Festival in Frenchtown at their annual RiverFest weekend. Marc's film will show at 4pm on Saturday, Sept 1.

Award-winning photographer Marc Reed uses time-lapse photography techniques to record a day in the life of an abandoned New Jersey paper mill very near Frenchtown. Clouds swirl overhead, beams of light track over broken machinery on the factory floor. A passing rain moves in then out again. "By simply speeding up the events of an ordinary day, an abandoned paper mill takes on a new and fascinating life," says Reed.

If you're not familiar with Frenchtown's annual RiverFest weekend, here is an excerpt from their press release:

Frenchtown, NJ's quintessential Victorian river town is small, preserved, and historic, while also chic and alive. This year's RiverFest, celebrating the environment, river history, land preservation, animal protection, and the arts will be Labor Day weekend ( 3 days!), Sept. 1-3, 2007.

There will be not-for-profit organizations sharing their vision and mission, juried vendors selling great crafts, a center stage with performances ranging from river gospel to reggae.

This year for the first time we are also recruiting for-profit businesses that are engaged in environmental product development ("green" products) to exhibit their newest innovations. Throughout town there will be in-store events and showcases of "green" merchandise. And our restaurants will be serving great food (and not only fish!).

Oh yes, being Frenchtown, we will also be celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of America’s favorite Frenchman: the Marquis de Lafayette (Sept. 6, 1757)!

We hope to locate the 1961 film "La Fayette" to show during our Fourth Annual Film Festival, featuring award winning independent films that weekend. Bon anniversaire, La Fayette!

Artsbridge Juried Show Awards

At the Artsbridge 13th Annual Juried Show, Marc Reed was awarded Honorable Mention for his entry. At last year's show, Marc won Best in Show for Painting. Hopefully he'll continue to win awards every year!

Opening night was packed and entertainment was provided by our own Nancy Shill (on fiddle) and her husband Charlie Pellegrino (on guitar). They dazzled the crowd with swing, jazz, country and some originals.

Artsbridge 13th Annual Juried Show

May Show: Occupants and Outcasts

New Works by Marc Reed and Beatrice Bork

This May, The Artists' Gallery will present Occupants and Outcasts, featuring new works by painters Marc Reed and Beatrice Bork. The show runs from May 11th to June 3rd, with an opening reception on Saturday May 12th, from 6-9pm.

"Branching Out"
by Beatrice Bork

The title Occupants and Outcasts is a reference to The Garden of Eden, and was chosen to reflect the disparities between the two artists work. While Beatrice's paintings depict animals in their natural habitats, in some sense still occupying the garden, Marc's work depicts the world of man, a species long ago cast out. In addition to differences in their subject matter, Marc and Beatrice work in different mediums. Marc in oils, Beatrice in watercolors.

Beatrice Bork of Flemington, NJ, is looking forward to presenting her artwork of the occupants which reflect inspirations from the natural inhabitants of which we share our earth. Among Bork's accolades: the Don Eckelberry Award for her bird art; Best in Show at the Art Center of Northern New Jersey, 12th Annual National Juried Show; many regional solo exhibits; national exhibits, and tours. Her watercolor paintings are published in magazines and books focused on wildlife art, including The Best of Wildlife Art volume 1 and 2 by North Light Books. "Fly"

Marc Reed is a painter with a love of the industrial landscape. He has been painting industrial landscapes for ten years and occasionally experiments in photography, recently completing an award-winning photo documentary on the ruins of Bethlehem Steel. In Occupants and Outcasts, Marc will show paintings of his recent travels and discoveries, including industrial scenes and several plein air landscapes.
