Treichler Exhibits at PHOTOgraphy 2011

John Treichler has had 2 photographs accepted into the Philadelphia Sketch Club PHOTOgraphy 2011 Exhibition. The juried exhibit runs from October 28 through November 12, 2011.

Treichler is exhibiting "Eyes Skyward" and "Hot Dog Johnny".

Founded in 1860, the Philadelphia Sketch Club is America’s oldest artists club. Exhibits and interest in fine art photography have existed at the Sketch Club from its earliest days. One of its founders, John L. Gihon, pursued photography as an art form as did other notable members to include Thomas Eakins, George B. Wood, William Shewell Ellis and Richard Dooner. Lectures at the Club’s monthly meeting have also focused on photography with the most notable being by Professor Eadweard Muybridge who did experimental photography of action subjects.

An Artists’ Reception will be held on Sunday, November 6, from 2 to 4 PM. Gallery hours are Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 5 PM. Admission is free. John Treichler has had his photograph "Monument" accepted into the 2011 First Annual Artsbridge Member's Photography Show. The juried exhibit runs from November 5 through November 13, 2011.

An Artists’ Reception will be held on Saturday, November 5, from 3 to 6 PM. The exhibit hours are Nov. 6 from 12 to 4pm, Nov 11-12 from 12 to 5pm, and Nov 13 from 12 to 4pm. Coffee and Conversation with Bracegirdle and Sardo

Gail Bracegirdle and Doug Sardo will be holding a “Coffee and Conversation” reception at the Artists’ Gallery, 18 Bridge Street, Lambertville, New Jersey on Sunday, November 6 from 1 to 4. Both artists will be in the gallery to discuss the techniques and inspirations for their work on display. Homemade cakes and pastries and freshly brewed coffee and beverages will be served.

“I hope you will drop by the gallery and see my watercolors,” says Bracegirdle, “I’ve been exploring a new approach, I call it ‘crinkle paper’. It’s a delightful effect achieved by soaking and crumpling the watercolor paper. When the paint is applied, it will take to the paper in unexpected — and uncontrolled — ways, somewhat like batik in fabric. “The spontaneity of it is really exciting,” she says. “You never know quite what you’ll get.”

Sardo, a pastel artist, explains “my work is always evolving,” the calligraphic lines of his previous paintings have morphed into softer surfaces in his latest work. “I’ve been painting along the Delaware Canal in Uhlerstown. It is a fantastic cluster of historic buildings and the only covered bridge over the Delaware Canal. It is a wonderful place to paint outside”.

You might think you know Gail Bracegirdle's and Doug Sardo's work. Perhaps you've enjoyed Bracegirdle's elegant florals or light-handed still lifes of sun-dappled fruits and vegetables. Once you've seen them you will immediately recognize Sardo's luminous landscapes emerging from calligraphic swirls of mauve, emerald, ocher, and scarlet.

Well, forget what you think you know, because both artists are eager to show you something new.

"I hope my work is always evolving," says Sardo, a plein air painter who works in pastels. "It should evolve." By way of evidence, the calligraphic lines of his previous paintings have morphed into softer surfaces in his latest work.

"The technique is called 'sfmuato' from the Italian word 'to smoke'. It means that there are no harsh outlines, areas blend into one another which makes for a slightly hazy, more realistic, depiction of light and color", explains Sardo.

"I'm always looking for a new approach," exclaims Bracegirdle, who notes she is adding a new wrinkle to her watercolors.

"I call it 'crinkle paper,'" says Bracegirdle, describing the results she gets by soaking and crumpling her watercolor paper. When the paint is applied, it will take to the paper in unexpected - and uncontrolled - ways, somewhat like batik in fabric.

It’s Raining Cats and Dogs

You could almost believe “It’s Raining Cats and Dogs” is meant literally, but in fact, it is the name of the art show recently opened at the Present Day Club, 72 Stockton St, Princeton, NJ.  The show is presented by a combination of predominantly NJ and Pa artists, all represented by the Riverbank Arts Gallery in Stockton, NJ . It’s owner for 20 years is Susan Roseman, who curated this show.

Artists Richard Harrington and Charles Katzenbach are big fans of bicycles. They love the elegant, geometric design. They appreciate the simple, efficient engineering. They fondly recall the Schwinn Spyders and English racers and classic Rollfasts of their youth and the freedom that a bicycle of your own represented.

When they began planning their joint show for The Artists' Gallery in Lambertville, Harrington and Katzenbach decided to make bicycles the theme. They also decided to make the show align with a few other topics close to their hearts: recycling, reducing waste, and sharing.

"It kills me to see a bike thrown out with the trash," said Harrington. "A bike shouldn't be in a landfill."

Harrington and Katzenbach hope that a few more will be saved from that fate this month as their show, "Freewheeling," aims to help support and promote the mission of Pedals for Progress, a High Bridge, NJ, organization that collects used bikes and ships them overseas to provide affordable, nonpolluting transportation for the world's working poor.

Harrington and Katzenbach will donate 20 percent of the purchase price of any works sold during this exhibition to Pedals For Progress. In addition, representatives from Pedals for Progress will be on hand at the The Artists' Gallery to accept bicycle donations on October 2 from 1 to 4 PM.
