Chuck's birdhouse must be seen in person to be appreciated. It has an entry from each side, leading into separate chambers within the tree trunk. And from a side view, it looks a bit too anatomically correct to post the photo here, so go see it in person!

Artists Explore Argonautika at McCarter

Alan Klawans, Sheila Letven, and Florence Moonan will be displaying pieces related to Jason and the Argonauts in conjunction with the "Argonautika" production by Mary Zimmerman at McCarter Theatre Center for the Performing Arts in Princeton, NJ. Alan Klawan's "Jason", Letven's "All That Glitters" and Moonan's "Under the Influence" will be on display in the gift shop area from March 15th through April 6th. The pieces are available for purchase before, during, and after each performance. Information about the performances are available at www.mccarter.org.

Artists Gallery Group Show at Hopewell Frame Shop

Beginning March 11th and continuing through the end of April, the walls of the Hopewell Frame Shop’s Gallery will be overflowing with the beautiful, evocative work of the current roster of members of the Artists’ Gallery in Lambertville. Abby Frantz, founding owner of the Hopewell Frame Shop, will curate and host her final Open House from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 15th, at the Shop’s Broad Street location. Refreshments will be catered by the Brothers’ Moon. Patrons and newcomers alike are encouraged to stop by, mingle with the artists, and wish Abby a fond farewell. After 32 years of picture framing and almost twenty nine years of running her shop in Hopewell, she has decided it is time to move on.

During the run of the show, the ownership of the Hopewell Frame Shop will change into the hands of Marc Udell of the Queenstown Gallery in Pennington. Reflecting on the sale of her long-term business, Abby says, "I have truly enjoyed my many years here and I would like to thank all of my customers for their continuous support and friendship. I have complete faith that the new owner will be able to continue the tradition of the finest custom framing in the area and I encourage you to offer him a warm welcome."

For her final show, Abby has chosen to highlight the members of The Artists' Gallery. "These artists have been supportive of the Hopewell Frame Shop’s Gallery since they first formed their partnership in 1996," says Abby Frantz, "and selecting them for my final show is my way of both thanking them and assuring them that their work will always be welcome in Hopewell." We at the Artists' Gallery are of course honored to fill this role, and are very thankful to Abby for her support over the years.

March Show: Line and Light

New works by: Jennifer Cadoff and Doug Sardo

"Line and Light" is a first! This month, the Artists' Gallery introduces their newest member: pastel painter Doug Sardo, whose dancing ribbons of color will delight your eyes and thrill your soul. The contrast between Doug's color-saturated paintings and that of co-exhibitor Jennifer Cadoff's beguilingly offbeat black-and-white drawings is startling and serves to highlight the unique strengths of each artist.

Doug Sardo is a former graphic artist who now paints with pastels full time. He captures his subjects – the reflective light on the Delaware, the wind moving through an ancient Sycamore, a red pickup truck mired in snow – on location near his Upper Black Eddy, PA, home. He uses color as an impressionist, juxtaposing complimentary hues that blend in the viewer’s eye. "I paint the color of the light in a scene, not the actual objects," says Mr. Sardo. "I work the pastels in layers, on sanded paper from Australia, which I mount on board. This allows me to hold and move the painting as I work on it. I never use an easel – it separates me from the creative process." Doug’s graphic artwork has been published by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York and he has painted many "treasure hunts" in Venice for longtime client Save Venice.

Princeton, NJ, artist Jennifer Cadoff is also inspired by everyday sights – horses in a field, an armful of pussy willows from the grocery store, bits of tree trimmings pocketed on a walk. "I like to come at my subjects from an unusual angle, or change their scale, or crop them tight, so that things one would usually pass by without a second thought are presented as I see them: Beautiful and worthy of consideration," says Ms. Cadoff. She simplifies forms into areas of tiny dots, black scribble, and the white of untouched paper. "I've actually been asked if I buy paper with dots and scribbles and collage them together," she says with a laugh, "but no, each piece is entirely hand-drawn. My obsessive personality is on display." Ms Cadoff’s award-winning art is often seen in regional juried shows, including those at Newark’s City Without Walls, Phillips Mill in New Hope PA, Perkins Center for the Arts in Moorestown NJ, the Philadelphia Sketch Club and the Philadelphia Watercolor Society, of which she is a signature member. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Mercer County Cultural and Heritage Commission.
