"Patterns & Meaning" - Alan J. Klawans and Andrew Werth

Please join us for Artists' Gallery's next show:

"Patterns & Meaning"
featuring Alan J. Klawans
and Andrew Werth

November 9 - December 2, 2012
Opening reception: Saturday, Nov 10, 3 to 6 pm

Artists' Gallery is pleased to present "Patterns & Meaning", an exhibition featuring the art of Alan J. Klawans and Andrew Werth. Using the formal terms of abstraction such as color, contrast, composition, and repetition, Klawans and Werth encourage viewers to explore the relationship between the visual image and meaning.

Andrew Werth
"Creation"
30x40, acrylic on panel

Andrew Werth, a former computer engineer turned artist, celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of mathematician Alan Turing by presenting paintings that use "Turing Patterns" for their underlying structure. Turing, in addition to being famous for his work on computer science, artificial intelligence, and cryptography, also wrote an influential paper describing how certain processes in nature could produce forms like the patterns on zebras and leopards.

Werth simulates these processes on the computer and embeds meaning in his images by twisting, tweaking, and otherwise transforming the patterns before turning them into paintings. He carefully designs the color transitions and then hand-paints thousands of individual marks of color so that the images have an optical depth that belies their flat surface.

Alan Klawans
"Rotunda"
30x20, original digital print

Alan J. Klawans also uses the computer as a tool in the production of his artwork. He begins each piece with a single word and uses that as a starting point for an abstract design that reflects upon the word's meaning. The words he starts with are taken from contemporary media sources and cover a variety of subjects including architecture, games, climate change, economics, politics, and war. Klawans interprets his linguistic subjects into graphic arrangements of colors and shapes, using lines both for structure and for visual accents in his compositions. The result is a series of original, limited edition digital prints.

Note:  We are all struggling through Hurricane Sandy and many of us went without electricity for far too long. But rest assured, power is back at Artists' Gallery and we will be open our normal hours. We hope you can join us at the November 10th Opening Reception and celebrate life returning to normal.

"Double Vision" - Jennifer Cadoff and Doug Sardo

Please join us for Artists' Gallery's next show:

"Double Vision"
featuring Jennifer Cadoff
and Doug Sardo

October 5 - November 4, 2012
Opening reception: Saturday, Oct 6, 4 to 7 pm

Walk into the Artists' Gallery (18 Bridge Street, Lambertville) this month, and be prepared to feast your eyes on two very different takes on contemporary art in "Double Vision," featuring Jennifer Cadoff and Doug Sardo.

 Doug Sardo
"Autumn Canal Walk"
18 x 24", pastel on paper

Doug Sardo's medium is pastel, and he revels in sumptuous color. For this show, Sardo continues to draw upon the beautiful local landscape around his Buck's County home for inspiration, but with a new twist: "Instead of making a single painting on location, I've been working in the studio on three variations of each of five different scenes," Sardo explains. "It's been exciting to explore the ways in which subtle changes -- color choices, for example, or different ways of applying pigment to paper -- can have an enormous impact on a painting's visual and emotional resonance."

Jennifer Cadoff
"Nature, Collaged #1"
16 x 20", ink and watercolor paper collage

While Princeton NJ artist Jennifer Cadoff also works in series, almost everything else about her work in this show stands in stark contrast to Sardo's: It is black and white, abstract, and minutely detailed. Cadoff uses the repetition of tiny distinctive marks (lines, circles, scribbling) to build her drawings in black ink on creamy watercolor paper. Some of the works on display are large and deceptively simple -- for example, a 22 x 30 inch sheet is covered with delicate parallel lines, producing the impression of moving water. Other pieces are layered and collaged, and a few include recognizable flower and leaf forms. Says Cadoff of this new direction in her work, "I've been having fun cutting and ripping my large drawings, then playing with the pieces to see how interact they with one another."

"Double Vision" will be on display at The Artists' Gallery in Lambertville Friday, Oct 5, through Sunday, Nov 4, 2012.  An opening reception will be held Saturday, Oct 6, 4-7 pm.

Expressions in Wood, Glass, and Bamboo - Katzenbach and Kevolic

Please join us for Artists' Gallery's next show:

"Expressions in Wood, Glass, and Bamboo"
featuring Charlie Katzenbach
and Norine Kevolic

September 7-30, 2012
Opening reception: Saturday, Sept 8, 4-7 pm

It's supposed to be a two-artist show, but when Charlie Katzenbach's and Norine Kevolic's latest work debuts at the Artists' Gallery on September 7, visitors will see immediately that "Expressions in Wood, Glass, and Bamboo" relies very heavily on the artistry of a third. Call her "Mother Nature".

Norine Kevolic
"Jubilation"
16" x 16"

"For this show, I wanted to illustrate how my ideas and abstract thoughts find symbolic expression in natural materials," Kevolic says. "Each mosaic represents a single idea that surfaced during the creative process, while also incorporating another interesting way to use bamboo. My intention was to bring out the subtle beauty and versatility of the material in an elegant way."

Charlie Katzenbach
"Stepping Out"
wood sculpture

Katzenbach, whose preferred medium has primarily been oil painting on glass, here also embraces wood, in the form of downed tree limbs. "With names like 'Getting Closer to Yew' and 'Reflections on a Beech', this work is intended to be both humorous and handsome" says Katzenbach.

Although Charlie's and Norine's aesthetics are different, they share a profound respect for the natural world and for craftsmanship. In addition, they both find inspiration in the spiritual. You might say, in fact, that their roots are the same.
