A Room With Two Views

"A Room With Two Views"
A 2-person show with Alla Podolsky and Doug Sardo

at Artists' Gallery in Lambertville, NJ
Nov 6 - Dec 6, 2009
Opening reception: Saturday, Nov 7 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm

Alla Podolsky’s oil paintings are a collection of new works, informed by a very personal perspective on universal themes: home, memory, internal versus external, close and remote. “The paintings are about seeing the world through the eyes of the child I once was, and seeing through the eyes of the adult I became. It's about losing home and finding it in unexpected places.”

Doug Sardo’s pastel paintings are vibrant impressionist interpretations of regional landscapes, rural architecture and river valley scenes. His paintings juxtapose brilliant complimentary colors and dynamic compositions that allow the viewers eye to blend the colors and travel into the painting. The exhibit will include new paintings from his plein aire painting excursions on the Amalfi coast, Italy, on the Polynesian islands of Raiatea and Moorea and the seaside town of Gloucester Massachusetts.

Both artists deal with similar themes in different, personal ways.

Both New Jersey natives, Moonan and Sanzalone, find the diverse cultural, historical and natural beauty of the region continually stimulates their creative endeavors. This is evident when viewing the two artists' work side by side. Sanzalone's paintings respond to the environment, while Moonan's works are largely drawn on autobiographical experiences.

Internal / External

"Internal / External"
A 2-person show with Marc Reed and Andrew Werth
at Artists' Gallery in Lambertville, NJ
Sept 11 - Oct 4, 2009
Opening reception: Saturday, Sept 12 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm

Internal / External contrasts the abstract internal "mindscapes" of Andrew Werth with the external urban industrial landscapes of Marc Reed.

"The Reality Problem"
by Andrew Werth

Andrew Werth's abstract paintings focus on issues of perception, consciousness, and the philosophy of mind. Using thousands of hand-painted marks of varying colors on multiple layers of paint, he creates pieces where the perceptual experience is often the subject of the paintings. Through the careful interplay of color between foreground and background, his paintings possess a visual depth that belies their generally flat surfaces.

"Reach"
by Marc Reed

Marc Reed looks outward towards the American industrial landscape in representational paintings of scenes in and around New Jersey. Using traditional oil and charcoal painting techniques, he captures the aesthetic quality of urban decay with angled lighting, gritty texture, and atmospheric skies.

A 2-person show with Gail Bracegirdle and Jennifer Cadoff
at Artists' Gallery in Lambertville, NJ
Aug 7 - Sept 6, 2009
Opening reception: Saturday, Aug 8 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm

Watercolorist Gail Bracegirdle of Bensalem, PA, is celebrated for her glorious color and luscious brushstrokes. She is also a sought-after and inspiring watercolor teacher. Princeton, NJ, artist Jennifer Cadoff is known for striking black and white drawings. Both artists are frequently selected for juried shows in the tri-state area, and have received awards for their work in regional and national exhibitions.

"Opening"
by Gail Bracegirdle

Bracegirdle is drawn to light, color and shadow in the natural world. For this show, she explored preserved land, farms and gardens in Pennsylvania and New Jersey to find the perfect venues for her plein air paintings. The addition of a soft Chinese brush to her repertoire has resulted in landscapes that are looser, bolder and more contemplative than ever. You can feel her watercolors dance and flow across the paper, even after the paint has dried.

"That's Life"
by Jennifer Cadoff

Cadoff’s eye is narrower, quirkier: A bit of discarded ribbon was the impetus for one series of large drawings in the show. Variations on the theme of patterned ribbons wending their way across dark, textured backgrounds is both emotionally resonant and whimsical. In another series of small drawings, a bright-eyed cat stretches and twists in shapes that echo the meandering ribbons, while clearly trying to coax a smile from the viewer as well.

Ellarslie Open XXVII and The Salon at Artworks

The annual Ellarslie Open is currently under way at the Trenton City Museum. As usual, the Artists' Gallery is pretty well represented and accepted into Ellarslie Open XXVII were Jennifer Cadoff, Patricia Lange, and Andrew Werth. Jennifer Cadoff won a Runner Up Award in the Drawing category, Andrew Werth won Honorable Mention in Digital Photography.

For the past 2 years, museum director Brian O. Hill has struggled with the problem of not having enough space to show all of the work he would like to show. This year Ellarslie is partnering with Artworks to present "The Salon Show" - a show of entries that didn't make it into the Ellarslie Open but are too good not to exhibit. Accepted into the Salon Show were Gail Bracegirdle and Joe Kazimierczyk.

The opening receptions for both shows have already happened, but Ellarslie Open XXVII runs until June 14 and The Salon at Artworks runs until June 27. Visit the Ellarslie and Artworks websites for directions, and more information.
